Barwani is a landrace cannabis growing area in Barwani District, in the south-west of Madhya Pradesh, India, in the Nimar growing region. The police reported cannabis grown among cotton and tur on a farm near Malphalya, in the Sendhwa area, in October 2022,[1] and in September 2026 they seized plants from four fields in the Shakkarkua–Borpadava area and found cannabis growing in five more in the hills and forests under Varla police station.[2]
Geography
Barwani District was formed on 25 May 1998 from the Khargone, or West Nimar, district. The district lies in the south-west of the state; the Narmada forms its northern boundary, with the Satpura ranges to the south and the Vindhyachal ranges to the north.[3] The fields raided on 12 September 2026 lay in hilly and forested country under Varla police station, in the Sendhwa subdivision.[2]
Cultivation
In October 2022 a team of the rural police seized more than 80 kg of cannabis plants from a farm near Malphalya village. The Free Press Journal, reporting the police account, wrote that the landowner had grown the plants between cotton and tur "in order to mislead the police". The Varla police had earlier seized plants at Dudhkheda village.[1]
On 10 September 2026 the police took more than 6,000 plants from four fields in the Shakkarkua–Borpadava area. Two days later 12 teams, more than 400 police from Barwani, Khargone and Khandwa districts, searched 19 villages under Varla police station with the help of drones, under the name Operation Green Strike. The searches covered remote places including Dokliyapani, Dhavliyagir, Bagdari, Takiyapani and Aadnadi; cannabis was found growing in five fields, and more than 11,000 plants were seized. The police said that the fields were on forest land and that further action would follow once the Forest Department had supplied information on leaseholders and encroachers. Over the two days they registered nine cases and seized more than 34 quintals of plants.[2]
