EBC 91926 is an artefact catalogued in the Economic Botany Collection of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: a women's money bag from Thailand, which Kew files under the plant name Cannabis sativa.[1] Its geography line reads Hmong, NE Thailand, naming the Hmong, and Kew's entry on GBIF describes it as Indigo-dyed hemp, cost about 30p.[2] Kew records J. Balfour-Paul as its collector, in 1991; it was entered at Kew in 2012.
The catalogue entry
The catalogue gives the artefact name and the parts held as Women's money bag, the plant name as 153.04 CANNABACEAE Cannabis sativa, the country as Thailand, the geography description as Hmong, NE Thailand and the storage as Bottles, boxes etc. It names no use and no user. The entry book number is 1.2012. The donor field reads Balfour-Paul J and the donor number 14b; the collector field reads Balfour-Paul J and the collection date 00/00/1991, the year 1991 alone. The catalogue leaves the donor date and collector's number blank.[1]
Kew's help page defines the collector as the person or institution who first obtained a specimen, and the entry book number as a number given to each group of specimens at the point of acquisition, in a series that runs each year.[3] Kew also publishes the entry to GBIF, with the locality Hmong, NE Thailand, the collector Balfour-Paul J, the year 1991, the remark Indigo-dyed hemp, cost about 30p and four photographs of the bag.[2]
The same donor and entry number are recorded for a sample of hemp muslin from China, Textile (Kew EBC 91920),[4] and for a sample of hemp fibre from China, the accession EBC 91993 (by 2012).[5]
The object
Kew's photographs show a small pouch of dark blue cloth, folded over and tied round with a black cord whose loose end hangs in a loop. The cloth is patterned with pale crosses and spots. Two strips of red cloth show, one where the pouch is folded and one at its far end. The catalogue does not describe the red cloth or the cord.[2]
