Anon. s.n. (by 1859) is a herbarium accession of cannabis from Japan that came through the herbarium of the Swiss botanist Heinrich Zollinger, who died in 1859. Its label gives no collector, date or place within Japan. The Naturalis Biodiversity Center holds the sheet as U.1604562.[1]
Collection and locality
The label, printed on blue paper, is headed Planta japonica ex herb. Zollinger. (Japanese plant from Zollinger's herbarium). It is completed in ink with the number 182, the name Cannabis Sativa and a variety, and the place Japonia (Japan), followed by a note on the herbarium the plant passed through, whose last word cannot be read with confidence.[2] A printed slip at the top of the sheet is that of the botanic garden of Utrecht, Hortus botanicus, number 039542.[2] The catalogue gives Zollinger as the collector and Japan as the place, with no date.[1]
Specimen and identification
The sheet carries one long, branched stem with small, narrow leaves.[2] On the label a word after var. is struck through and followed by indica, with an author's abbreviation that cannot be read.[2] The catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa var. indica (Lam.) Wehmer.[1]
