Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label records a Japanese cannabis plant that passed through Zollinger's herbarium. It gives no place within Japan, no date, no collector, no habitat and no use. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (1181 × 1920 pixels). Both readings were made at the limit of the image's resolution; the page states only what they agree.

  • Header slip (printed). Hortus botanicus / 039542 / UTRECHT.
  • Label (blue paper, printed border). Printed, in a side panel: Planta japonica ex / herb. Zollinger.; printed № with, in ink, 182. Cannabis Sativa / var. [a struck-through word] indica [author unread] / Japonia. — i[n] Hb. Hort[i] / [last word unread].
  • Readings that differ. The struck-through word was read japon… once and japoni once; the author after indica was read DC. once and Rl. once; the last word was read Bog. (which would be Buitenzorg) once and bot. or boz. once. None of these is used. The number was read 182 twice, with 102 or 162 allowed once.
  • The sheet carries the barcodes U.1604562 and, from an earlier numbering, L 0713349.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The label names only Japan (Japonia), and the catalogue adds no place within it.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The label names Zollinger as the herbarium the plant came from (ex herb. Zollinger), not as its collector, so the collector field is empty and the title takes the Anon. form. The catalogue's Zollinger H as collector is its own reading. Heinrich Zollinger (1818-1859) worked in Java from 1842 (English Wikipedia); no source read places him in Japan. He issued a series of specimens titled Plantae Japonicae 1847; whether this sheet belongs to it is not stated.

Title. The plant was in Zollinger's herbarium, so it was gathered before his death on 19 May 1859, the limit the title gives. The label's 182 is the number on Zollinger's label, not a collector's number, and the title takes the s.n. form.

Taxon. The scientific name field gives Cannabis sativa var. indica with no author: both readings of the label agree on the variety, neither on the author.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue names Zollinger as the collector; the label names his herbarium as the plant's source.
  • The catalogue gives the author of var. indica as (Lam.) Wehmer; the label's author abbreviation cannot be read.
