Akto is a cannabis growing area of the oasis strip of Akto County (阿克陶县), in the Kizilsu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang, China. It is part of the Southern Xinjiang growing region and adjoins the Kashgar growing area. In April 2024 the county's narcotics control office said that offenders in Akto had interplanted cannabis among field crops year after year to hide it.[1]
Before 2000
In a forensic study published in 1992, Zhang Fengying of the Xinjiang Institute of Criminal Science and He Pingwen of the Beijing Institute of Criminal Science analysed cannabis from nine places of production in southern Xinjiang, Akto among them.[2]: 1
Since 2000
On 31 December 2023 the Akto County public security bureau dealt with a case of illegal growing of drug plants. Police arrested a man the next day after a five-hour watch on his home and found several packets of cannabis hidden in the feed heap of his cattle pen, 627 g in all. He told them that he had obtained cannabis plants by chance and then begun growing them in his own courtyard.[3]
On 24 July 2024 a resident told the Yumai (玉麦) police station of the county that he had found cannabis growing in his maize field. Police confirmed one planted cannabis plant there and found two more in two other maize fields, and uprooted all three.[4] In September 2024, acting on a report from the public, the county police uprooted 11 cannabis plants that a man was growing at home and found cannabis seed wrapped in newspaper.[5]
