This is a documentation subpage for Cite hansard. It contains usage information, categories, and other content that is not part of the original template.

CS1-family citation template for parliamentary debate records. Hansard is the conventional name for the official verbatim transcripts of debates in Westminster-derived parliaments (UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India and many others).

Usage

{{cite hansard
 |title=
 |jurisdiction=
 |house=
 |date=
 |vol=
 |col=
 |speaker=
 |url=
 |access-date=
}}

Parameters

title
Debate subject, rendered in quotes. Strongly recommended; without it the citation cannot be told apart from other entries on the same date.
jurisdiction
Parliament, e.g. "UK Parliament", "Parliament of Australia", "Parliament of India", "Parliament of South Africa".
house
Chamber, e.g. "House of Commons", "House of Lords", "Senate", "Lok Sabha", "Rajya Sabha".
date
Sitting date.
vol or volume
Volume number of the bound Hansard series.
col or column
Column number. Hansard paginates by column, not by page.
speaker
Member speaking, if citing a specific intervention. Format as the member would be named in the record, e.g. "Crispin Blunt MP", "Senator Smith".
url
Link to the online Hansard entry, where available.
access-date or accessdate
Date the URL was last verified.

When to use

  • Citing a minister's statement on drug policy, eradication operations or treaty obligations.
  • Citing parliamentary committee evidence on cannabis or narcotics enforcement.
  • Citing debates on the passage of drug-related legislation, in tandem with {{cite act}} for the statute itself.

Prefer Hansard over secondary reporting where the primary record is available. A minister's actual words in the chamber are more authoritative than a newspaper paraphrase.
