Discussion

Why Zunhua is a growing area

  • The United States Department of Agriculture's inventory of plant introductions for January to March 1917 (published 1922) prints F. N. Meyer's note on his lot 2334a, collected at Malanyu, Chihli Province, on 25 November 1916, under a Chinese name the inventory glosses "thread hemp": "A variety of hemp, producing very strong fiber of medium length. Thrives especially well on lands recently cleared of brush or timber." The note names a kind of hemp and the place it came from.

How the border is drawn

  • The note names Malanyu and nothing wider. The line follows the county-level city that holds the town, Zunhua, as OpenStreetMap maps it (relation 3291031): about 1,500 km², the figure in the infobox.
  • The infobox point (40.13, 117.94) is the centre of the border, not a field.

Growing status

The status is Historical. The one source dates from 1916 and says nothing of later growing; the infobox gives 1916 as both the first and the last year a source records hemp grown there.

Sources

  • USDA inventory no. 50 (1922). The department received Meyer's consignment on 9 February 1917 and numbered the lot plant introduction 44206.
