Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label records cannabis cultivated on terraces at Salme, at 2,000 metres, in May 1974, and gives the Nepali name Ganja. That is direct evidence of cultivation in the village at that date. It does not say what the crop was grown for, from what seed, or how widely, and it records no local variety. The accession is classified Other, as other sheets that document cultivation are. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00751457, 2833 × 4096 pixels).

  • Printed form FLORE NEPAL / Université de Grenoble Laboratoire de Botanique; entries by hand: Urticaceae / Cannabis sativa L. / Lieu : Salme / Latitude : 28°2 / Longitude : 85°5 / Altitude : 2000m / Date : 19/05/74 / Observations : Cultivé en terrasses. / Nepali : Ganja. / Collecteur : B. Yon.
  • Pencil 170 at the lower right and 203 at the lower left of the sheet, outside the label's fields. Neither is a collector number: the form has no number field, and the catalogue gives none.

Georeferencing

The coordinate is the label's own, read as degrees and minutes: 28°02′ N, 85°05′ E, stored as 28.03, 85.08. Read that way, its SRTM 30-metre elevation is 2,046 metres against the label's 2,000, and OpenStreetMap places it in Kispang, Nuwakot District, Bagmati Province. Read as decimal degrees (28.2, 85.5) the figures would fall at 4,277 metres in Rasuwa, which a terraced field cannot be. The degrees-and-minutes reading is therefore the one used; it is a reading of an ambiguous form, recorded here. Wiart 582 (1981), from the same village, prints 28°03′ N, 85°08′ E, a point whose SRTM elevation of 3,114 metres does not match its own label's 2,200, so it is not used here.

Editorial treatment

The title takes the s.n. form with the locality because the sheet has no collector number. The local name field takes Ganja (Nepali). The collector field takes B. Yon; the catalogue gives his name as Bernard Yon, and he is not further identified here. The province and district fields take Bagmati Province and Nuwakot District, where the coordinate falls and where Wiart's label puts Salme.
