Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label and the tag give the mountain, the date and the collector. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PEY0025464, 1,008 × 1,440 pixels).
- Label (printed 清華大學植物標本室 / HERBARIUM OF TSING HUA UNIVERSITY, typed): Moraceae / Cannabis sativa L. / Hopeh Miao Feng Shan / Coll. Y. C. Yang / Herb. No. 8045 (ink) / Det., a cursive signature / Date June. 17 typed over the printed 19, then 34. Pencil 170.
- Tag tied to the plants (ink): 妙峯山 / 6/17.
- Herbarium-number label (printed Herb. № / 清華大學植物標本室): 008045 stamped in blue, over 08278, struck through.
The readings agree on the place, the date, the herbarium number and the collector. One marks the second initial uncertain (C, or G), and one takes the typed genus as Canrabis. Neither reads the determiner's signature; one suggests W. C. Cheng, with doubt.
Georeferencing
妙峰山 (Miao Feng Shan) is Mount Miaofeng, a mountain in north-western Beijing (Wikidata Q15895800; English Wikipedia). The point 40.07, 116.01 is the summit, Wikidata's point for the mountain, which OpenStreetMap's peak node (node 5062604605) matches; SRTM gives 1,280 m there, and the label gives no altitude. The label and the tag name the mountain and no place on it, and no source read measures the mountain's extent: the uncertainty takes in the town of the same name, Miaofengshan (Wikidata Q10943042), about 11 km to the south. It is a point for the mountain, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 12 km.
Editorial treatment
Title. The label gives no collector's number (8045 is the herbarium's), so the title takes s.n. and the mountain's name, which also sets it apart from Yang s.n. (1930s).
Collector. The collector field takes the label's Y. C. Yang. The Tsing Hua University sheet of Yang s.n. (1930s), in Beijing, is labelled for a C. Y. Yang (or J. Y. Yang) in June of a year whose last figure is lost, with no place and no herbarium number. The two labels share no number, place or day, and the page does not take them as one gathering; whether they name one collector is not known. No source on Y. C. Yang was found, and the name is not linked.
Province. The label gives Hopeh (Hebei). Mount Miaofeng now lies in Beijing Municipality, and the province field takes Beijing.
Date. The label's day, 17, is typed over the printed 19 of the year line, and the tag gives 6/17; 17 June 1934 is stored.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium gives the collector as C. Y. Yang, with no province; the label reads Y. C. Yang and Hopeh Miao Feng Shan.
