Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label places cannabis in western Hupeh in September 1907 and gives nothing more: no locality, altitude, habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high).
- Label (printed, completed by hand): No. 428 / ARNOLD ARBORETUM. EXPEDITION TO CHINA, 1907–09. Western Hupeh. / Cannabis sativa Linn. / Coll. E. H. Wilson. Alt. (blank) / 9/07.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted: Western Hupeh is a region. The province field takes Hubei.
Editorial treatment
Date. 9/07 is read as September 1907, the first year of the expedition the label names; the month is stored.
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's E. H. Wilson. He is Ernest Henry Wilson (1876–1930), who collected in Hubei and Sichuan for Veitch and then for the Arnold Arboretum, with expeditions to China in 1907, 1908 and 1910 (English Wikipedia; Harvard botanist index), and the prose links that form.
Source discrepancies
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the label.
