Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label records cannabis tended in the winter cereal fields of Salme, at 2,200 metres, in May 1981, and gives its Tamang name. Entretenue says the plants were kept or looked after, not that they were sown; the label does not say what they were kept for. Together with Yon s.n., Salme (1974), which records terrace cultivation in the same village in 1974, the sheet is evidence that cannabis was part of Salme's field system over at least seven years. It does not establish a named variety, a landrace or a living germplasm holding. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from the Edinburgh image (E00751459, 2838 × 4096 pixels).

  • Printed form FLORE DU NEPAL / village de SALME (28°03'N/85°08'E). District de Nuwakot. / Programme "VERSANT" du GRECO Himalaya-Karakorum; fields filled in by hand: nom scientifique Cannabis sativa L. / famille CANNABIACÉES / nom Tamang Sima(-dombo) / date 23/5/1981 / lieu-dit Djong / Altitude 2200 m / station Entretenue dans les champs de céréales d'hiver / remarque blank / collecteur JACQUES WIART (stamped) / identification blank / spécimen n° 582.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. The form's printed heading gives the village's position as 28°03′ N, 85°08′ E, but that point lies at 3,114 metres in SRTM 30-metre elevation, against the label's 2,200 for Djong; and no gazetteer point for Salme or Djong was found that the 2,200 metres could test (GeoNames' Salme entry is the centroid of a former administrative unit, and OpenStreetMap's Salme node lies at about 1,795 metres). The heading's point is quoted, not used. Yon s.n., Salme (1974) carries a coordinate from its own label. The province and district fields take Bagmati Province and Nuwakot District, which the label names.

Editorial treatment

The local name field takes Sima(-dombo) (Tamang), the label's form with the language it names; the lead gives the two forms the parenthesis allows. The locality field takes Salme (lieu-dit Djong). The collector field takes J. Wiart; the catalogue gives Jacques Wiart, and he is not further identified here.
