Discussion

Why the area is on the map

  • Reports that cannabis is grown in the district:
    • The Arunachal Times (22 September 2026): the deputy commissioner, at the district NCORD meeting, spoke of the "increasing incidence of cannabis cultivation in the Kalaktang area" and ordered officials to identify landowners "permitting the cultivation of cannabis on their land".
    • NE Now (23 December 2020): the Sashastra Seema Bal was "trying to sensitize the locals to give up the illegal cultivation of cannabis in the region", after a seizure of about 290 kg from a van travelling from Kalaktang towards Udalguri.
  • Cannabis that is gathered and used: Namsa and colleagues (2011), working among the Monpa of the Kalaktang region in 2006–2009, list Cannabis sativa ("Namku, Wild") with leaves and seeds "mixed with maize flour" for livestock. Thungon and colleagues (2026), working in ten Sherdukpen villages of the Rupa and Shergaon circles in 2023–2024, list cannabis (makchangmu) named by 101 of 110 informants: leaf paste for burns, seeds for sick hens and cattle. Thungon and colleagues do not say whether the plants are wild or grown.
  • Seizures traced to the Kalaktang area: about 1,654 kg of cannabis, about 1,080 kg of it in compressed packages, and a hydraulic press near Betchilling (January 2025); 150 kg at Bhalukpong "sourced from Kalaktang" (October 2024); about 210 kg in an operation that began with a Seppa arrest and led, on the arrested man's statement, to Rangthangzorpam (June 2025).
  • The sources name Kalaktang and report by district and subdivision, so the district is the unit.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is a proxy: the present West Kameng District, from the OpenStreetMap administrative relation for the district, after Bichom District was formed from parts of West and East Kameng in March 2024. It is clipped at the outline of the Eastern Himalayas region (ground at or above 200 m), which leaves out a strip of about 46 km² of foothills on the Assam border, Bhalukpong included. The outline measures about 3,800 km², the figure in the infobox.
  • The district administration's own description of the district predates Bichom District. The article takes from it only the district's name, its borders with Bhutan, Tibet and Tawang, its mountain ranges, its headquarters and its peoples, and leaves out its list of eastern and southern neighbours, which no longer matches the district.
  • The cultivation the deputy commissioner reported, the seizures traced to the district and the Monpa study area are in the Kalaktang area; the 2020 NE Now report names no place for the cultivation. The drives against wild cannabis are at Dirang, Sangti, Balemu and along the road from Senge to the Bomdila Pass.

Growing status

The status is Active: cultivation is reported in 2020 and 2026, and cannabis from the area is seized in 2024 and 2025. No source read says that growing in the district has ended.

Where the sources disagree

  • Denzi. The Arunachal Times (21 December 2024) reports the Denzi drive under the headline "Wild cannabis destroyed" but calls the plants there "marijuana plants" without saying whether they were wild or planted. The article states only that plants were destroyed.
  • The Kalaktang seizure. The Arunachal Times calls the January 2025 seizure "the highest-ever seizure of suspected cannabis" without saying over what area; the Arunachal Observer calls it a record for the state. The article gives the state record as a claim of the Arunachal Observer.

Sources not used

  • A wild-cannabis drive by villagers of Jerigaon and Duithing in the Nafra subdivision (The Arunachal Times, 14 September 2021). Villages of the Nafra circle passed to Bichom District in 2024, and on the OpenStreetMap boundaries used for the border Nafra lies outside West Kameng; the report does not place the two villages more precisely.
  • The news item of 11 August 2026 on wild cannabis destroyed at Bomja is in Tawang District, outside this area.
  • A report of about 325 kg seized by the Sashastra Seema Bal in West Kameng (Morung Express, from IANS, 20 September) gives no year in the text.
