Discussion

Evidentiary scope

This is a sample of leaves and fruits named as a drug preparation, and not a field gathering. It has a name and a broad region and no number, date or place below the country. It documents bhang from the East Indies reaching a Swedish collection, at a date the catalogue does not give. It shows no continuing population, so it supports neither a landrace nor a feral classification; the accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

The sample has not been seen. The text is the museum's catalogue transcription, read on 11 October 2026. The catalogue lists no image, and GBIF's copy (occurrence 1096663903) carries no media.

  • l. between the two names is read as "or" (the Latin vel, abbreviated).
  • Kapslar is translated "capsules", the word the 1868 Pharmacopoeia of India uses for the same parts; the catalogue's English note gives seed pods.

Georeferencing

No point is given. Ostindien names no place below the country. It can mean the Indian subcontinent or the East Indies at large, the islands of Southeast Asia included, and the catalogue gives no country, only the continent, Asia.

Editorial treatment

Page type. The sample is plant material, leaves and fruits, so it is an accession and not a made object.

Country. The country field gives India. The label's Ostindien can also mean the East Indies broadly, so the country is not certain. It rests on the names Bang and Subjee, which the 1868 Pharmacopoeia of India gives as Hindustani names for this preparation, and on the companion sample from the same donor, which is labelled for Calcutta.

Title. Herbarium accessions take the collector's name; the catalogue's collector field gives Warrington, and the title adds the label's place word with s.n. and s.d..

Collector. The collector field is empty although the catalogue's collector field gives Warrington. The label of the companion sample says that Warrington presented it, not that he gathered it, and the surname alone identifies no person.

Date. None is given. The catalogue entry was created on 17 November 2008, which is when the sample was catalogued, not when it was made or given.
