Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The field form on the Yangling sheet gives the locality as Shang Hsien, Shensi (cult.): the plant was taken from cultivation in Shang County in September 1933. The Beijing label gives the county, the date and the collector, and no habitat. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1933. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other, before the Yangling form was read.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557967, 1,041 × 1,440 pixels).
- Label (printed 國立北平研究院植物學研究所標本室贈 / DISTRIBUTED FROM / HERBARIUM OF INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING, CHINA, typed): Cannabis sativa Linn. / Loc. Shensi: Shang Hsien / Coll. T.[·].Wang / Field No. 846 / Date Sept. 19, 193[3] (the last digit runs into the printed Det.) / Det. by W.Y.Hsia.
- Tag (pale blue), its writing faded out.
- SHENSI province stamp; Fan Memorial Institute of Biology herbarium stamp; red 46807; pencil 27.
The readings differ on two points. The last digit of the year was read once as 3 and once as 8, the second reading marking it uncertain and allowing 2 or 3; the middle initial was read once as F or P and once as P, uncertain.
- Yangling sheet (WUK0001288), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (WUK0001288, 990 × 1,440 pixels). Typed form (INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING / FLORA OF CHINA): Field No. W. 846 / Date 19/9/1933 / Locality Shang Hsien, Shensi (cult.) / Collector (faded, not read). Label of the Herbarium Academiae Nationalis Pekinensis: Cannabis sativa Linn. / Shensi: Shang Hsien / Sept. 19, 1933 / Leg. T.P.Wang.(846). Det. W.Y.Hsia. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree.
Georeferencing
Shang Hsien is Shang County (商縣), a former county of Shaanxi (Wikidata Q7488607); today's Shangzhou District of Shangluo carries the alias Shangxian (Wikidata Q1339355). The point 33.89, 109.86 is the middle of Shangzhou District's administrative area in OpenStreetMap (relation 2971125, about 2,637 km²), checked to fall inside it; the label gives no altitude. The present district is taken for the county of 1933. It is an area point for the county, not the place the plant was gathered. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 29 km.
Editorial treatment
Date. The last digit of the year is partly hidden. One reading takes it as 3, and the catalogue gives 1933; 19 September 1933 is stored, and the title takes 1933. The form and the label on the Yangling sheet give the year in full, 1933, in both readings.
Collector. The label on the Yangling sheet reads T.P.Wang, clear in both readings, and settles the middle initial the Beijing label leaves faded: the collector field takes T. P. Wang. The catalogue's T. F. Wang is on neither label. No source on him was found: the only T. F. Wang in the Harvard botanist index was active in the 1960s. He is not F. T. Wang (Wang Fa-tsuan), whose initials stand the other way round. The name is not linked.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Two sheets, one accession. The Beijing and Yangling sheets share the number, the county and the date; the Yangling label's T.P.Wang fits the Beijing label's faded T.[·].Wang. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Source discrepancies
- The Beijing label gives no habitat; the field form on the Yangling sheet adds (cult.) after the place.
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium gives the collector as T. F. Wang for the Beijing sheet and T. P. Wang for the Yangling one.
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0001288 also as record be210f47); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.
