Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The labels give the place, the altitude, the date and the collector. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557943, 1,052 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field form (printed INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING / FLORA OF CHINA, typed): Field No. W. 413 / Date Sept. 20,1935 / Locality Hwei-maling, Taishan, Shantung / Altitude 600m. / Collector Y.C.Wang.
  • Herbarium label (HERBARIUM ACADEMIÆ NATIONALIS PEKINENSIS / FLORA CHINENSIS, typed): Cannabis sativa Linn. / Shantung: Taishan, Hwei-maling, Sep. 20,1935 / Leg. Y.C.Wang (413). Det. K.M.Liou.
  • Tag (printed): Yun-Chang Wang, with a faint blue number. SHANTUNG province stamp; Hg Cl2; round stamp of the herbarium of the Institute of Botany, National Academy of Peiping; stamped number 421625.

The two readings agree.

  • Yangling sheet (WUK0001280), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (WUK0001280, 990 × 1,440 pixels). Typed form (INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING / FLORA OF CHINA): Field No. W. 413 / Date Sept. 20,1935 / Locality Hwei-maling, Taishan, Shantung / Altitude 600m. / Collector Y.C.Wang. Label of the Herbarium Academiae Nationalis Pekinensis: Shantung: Taishan, Hwei-maling, Sep. 20,1935 / Leg. Y.C.Wang (413) Det. K.M.Liou. Determination slip: Cannabis sativa Linn. / Determinavit K. M. Liou 1936. A tag on the stem, partly hidden, ending Wang. Round stamp of the herbarium of the Institute of Botany, National Academy of Peiping. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree.

Georeferencing

Hwei-maling is read as Huimaling (回马岭), one of the stone gateways on the stairway up Mount Tai (泰山), between Hongmen and Zhongtianmen; Chinese Wikipedia lists 回马岭坊 among the mountain's nine stone gateways. The identification rests on the sound of the name and on the label's Taishan; no source read gives the label's spelling. The point 36.24, 117.11 is the gateway, OpenStreetMap node 13302709760. SRTM gives 690 m there against the label's 600 m, so the plant grew some 90 m below it, on the slope the stairway climbs. The point stands for that stretch of the mountainside, not the spot where the plant was gathered. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's Y. C. Wang; the tag's Yun-Chang Wang is the full form. The Harvard botanist index has a Wang Yun-chang, born in 1906, who collected in northern China from 1931, but no source places him in Shandong in 1935. The name is not linked.

Elevation. The elevation field stores the label's 600 m.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Two sheets, one accession. The Beijing and Yangling sheets share the number, the place, the altitude and the date. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Source discrepancies

  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0001280 also as record be212388); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.
