Evidentiary scope

The sheet places a fruiting cannabis plant at Tong Dong in 1826, in Wallich's hand. It names no habitat, use or local name and does not say whether the plant was cultivated, escaped or growing wild, so the accession is classified Other. A single sheet does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from Kew's image of the sheet (K001039640, 7142 × 10248 pixels).

  • Slip (lower right, written at right angles to the sheet), ink: 881 (top left corner) / Cannabis / sativa L.; pencil: 4665. and a small B; ink: Toongdong 25 followed by a month and, below, 1826.
  • Boxed Kew labels a = 4665.G (lower left) and B = 4665.H (lower centre).
  • Pencil line along the foot of the sheet 4665. a with a word read as Napalia, then B with a place read as Taong Dong. The first letter of each word is uncertain.
  • Barcodes K001039640 (top right) and K001039639 (lower left).

Two independent readings made for this page agree on the day, 25, and the year, but not on the month: one reads Nov (with a superscript), the other Mar, with May possible. In McPartland and Small (2020, supplementary file 1, p. 78) the date is 24.XI.1826. Two of the three readings give November, and Wallich's other Tong Dong gatherings in the catalogue are dated November 1826 (9104) and January 1827 (6206), so the date field holds November 1826. The day is 25 in both readings here and 24 in the paper, so no day is stored, and the article attributes the paper's date to the paper. The first letter of the place on the slip is read as T by both, without certainty. 881 is not explained by the sheet.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted and no province is given. Wallich's own wording elsewhere in his catalogue puts Tong Dong near Ava: Mons Tong Dong dicta prope Avam (8623 G), Montes Avae, Taong Dong dictae (100), Tong Dong near Ava (9104, 6206). That makes it a hill or range near Ava (Inwa), not a settlement. The Wallich Catalogue Online's modern name, Thandaung, does not fit that wording. The Thandaung places found in GeoNames and Wikidata lie in Bago Region, Kayin State, the Naypyidaw area and near Pyin Oo Lwin, none of them near Ava. McPartland and Small give Toong Dong Mountains near Inwa in Mandalay Region, and the province field follows them. Hills lie on both banks of the Irrawaddy at Ava, and Wallich's wording does not say which bank, so the attribution rests on the paper.

Editorial treatment

The title follows the catalogue's own designation, number 4665, collection H, in the form Wallich 4665 H, as the Grierson 2029a page keeps its letter. The title takes the year. GBIF's date, 1 January 1826, is a year-only value, not a day. Wallich lived from 1786 to 1854 (Wallich Catalogue Online), so 1826 falls within his life and is taken as the collection year.

The sheet carries two accessions' worth of material. Collection G (K001039639, Nepal, 1821) is not drafted here. Which of the two branches is H is shown only by where Kew placed the barcodes and boxes; the article does not assign them.

GBIF's interpreted record marks the specimen OriginalMaterial and Kew's verbatim field reads Unknown Type Material. Neither names a taxon it would be original material for, and Cannabis sativa L. dates from 1753, so the article makes no type claim.
