Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The specimen is a plant grown in 1927 at Detskoye Selo from seed Vavilov gathered at Chekhosarai in 1924, not a plant collected in Afghanistan. It documents that seed sample, and the population it came from, only through the grow-out. Neither the papers nor Tropicos say how the plants at Chekhosarai were grown or used. Vavilov and Bukinich (1929) described the hemp of eastern Afghanistan as wild. McPartland and Small (2020) place var. asperrima as the Central Asian wild-type, but a taxonomic placement is not an observation of the population, so no classification is entered. Its importance is nomenclatural: it is the lectotype of one name and the epitype of another. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
The label was read from Figure 6b of McPartland and Small (2020), as published (figure file 1512 × 1177 pixels; the label occupies about 300 pixels of its width). Legible: № 599 in the left margin; Cannabis indica Lam. var. kafiristanica Vav.; Афганистан. Чехосарай. 1924 г.; Репродукция: Детское село; 27 г.; and Н. И. Вавилов (семена) over a second Н. И. Вавилов. Not legible at this resolution: the two printed lines of the heading, the abbreviations before each Н. И. Вавилов, and the end of the number at the top right, which is cut by the photograph's edge after 395. The reading agrees with Tropicos, read through GBIF (Chekhosarai, 1924, seed sown in 1927 at Pushkin, Detskoye Selo), and with Small and Cronquist's citation of the sheet (# 3952 ... of Vavilov 599, Chekhosara). The Tropicos specimen page (101276002) returns no data without a browser session and was not read directly.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted. The plant was raised from seed at Detskoye Selo, so a point at Asadabad would place a grow-out at the place its seed came from, and a second sheet of the same seed would plot the same population twice. No page exists for the 1924 seed collection itself to carry a point. The province field takes Kunar Province, the paper's present-day attribution of Chekhosarai (Asadabad).
Editorial treatment
Accession type. The sheet is a grow-out voucher, so the accession is a reproduction. No accession of the seed sample it came from exists, so no parent is set.
Dates. The collection date is 1924, the year Vavilov gathered the seed. The grow-out year, 1927, is the sample harvest date.
Title. No collector number is given by any source. The number 599 is the number of Vavilov's seed sample (Small and Cronquist: from seeds sown in 1927 of Vavilov 599), not a field number for the sheet, so the title takes s.n. with the locality. Chekhosarai is the spelling of Tropicos and of the 2020 paper's type citation.
Catalogue number. WIR 599, 3952 is the paper's citation of the sheet: the seed number followed by the herbarium's sheet number.
Scientific name. The field takes the name of which the specimen is a type, Cannabis sativa subsp. indica var. asperrima, with McPartland and Small as determiners. The name written on the label is given in the article.
Source discrepancies
- Name on the label. The photograph shows Cannabis indica Lam. var. kafiristanica Vav.; the 2020 supplement (p. 21) says the two WIR specimens are labeled C. sativa var. kafiristanica. GBIF (Tropicos) files the sheet as Cannabis sativa var. asperrima (Regel) McPartl. & E.Small.
- Spelling of the locality. Chekhosarai (Tropicos; the 2020 paper's epitype citation); Chekhosara (Small and Cronquist 1976); Chekosarai (the supplement's citation of the paratype, WIR 599, 3953, and of the WIR sheets of other seed numbers from the same place).
- Where Small and Cronquist published the combination. The 2020 paper cites var. kafiristanica (Vavilov) Small & Cronquist as Taxon 24: 429, 1976. The article is in Taxon volume 25 (1976), where the combination and the lectotype are on p. 429.

A sheet at the Western Australian Herbarium, PERTH 1299379 (GBIF occurrence 2853882768; no image), gives the collector as Inst., Vavilov, the number 3952, the locality Vavilov Insitute [sic], the date 1927 and the country Russian Federation, determined Cannabis sativa L. by S. A. James. It names no place in Afghanistan, Chekhosarai or Serebriakova. Whether it is material of this plant cannot be told from the PERTH entry, and it is not treated as part of this accession.
