Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The accession rests on two herbarium sheets of plants grown in Mississippi from seed whose labels give Turkey as its origin. They show that seed said to be Turkish was grown there; they do not show where in Turkey the seed was gathered or how it reached the university. No surviving seed of the lot has been traced. The page therefore carries no locality, coordinates, classification or conservation priority.
Identifier
The identifier UMS-TUR-UNK-0019700004 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence.
UMSstands for the University of Mississippi, which grew the lot.TURis the ISO code for Turkey, the recorded seed origin.UNK: no province is recorded.- Month
00: the date the seed was gathered is unknown. - Year 1970 is the year of the earliest dated sheet of the lot. The seed had reached the university by then; the year is not a collection date.
Lineage
The label gives no generation, so the sourcing type is Unknown provenance. No label or source read so far ties this seed to Quimby's other Turkish lots or to the 1972 lots, so no parent accession is set; the Turkish lots are linked only as related accessions. The initials D.P.G. appear on both MS-SY (11/9/69, no number) and MS-SFF (1968, lever pak no. 103). The dates and numbers differ, so they are separate accessions.
Location and georeferencing
The country field gives the recorded seed origin, Turkey, not the place where the plants grew. The grow-out at University, Mississippi, is stated in the article. No coordinate is given and the map is off: a point in Mississippi would misplace Turkish seed, and no place in Turkey is recorded.
Dates
The collection date is left empty because the date the seed was gathered is unknown. 7 July 1970, the date of the dated sheet, is entered as the sample harvest date; Harvard records no date for sheet 01005293.
The dates in the seed note (26 September 1969; 11/9/69; 1968) are not entered as collection dates: the labels do not say what they mark.
Label reading
The sheets have not been seen. The label text above is Harvard's transcription in its specimen index (read on 8 October 2026), where the lot code and seed note are in the remarks field. Harvard has published no image of any sheet of the lot.
- No sheet carries a collector number.
- The sheets give the vernacular names hemp, Indian hemp, fimble, gallow grass, grass marihuana, marihuana, hanf, chanvre, and others, a general list that says nothing of Turkish usage, so it is not entered as a local name.
- The abbreviations in the seed note (F.L., D.P.G., lever pak, lever no.) are quoted as transcribed; no label explains them, and the page does not interpret them.
- Harvard's botanist index lists the collector as Quimby, Mayhard Ward (born 1905), also known as M. W. Quimby. His 1973 paper in Economic Botany gives his first name as Maynard.
- The determination is Cannabis sativa Linnaeus, with no subspecies. The Thai and Vietnamese sheets of the same series were determined by Small on the same day as subsp. indica. The page reports the determinations as Harvard records them and draws nothing from the difference.

M. W. Quimby, N. J. Doorenbos, C. E. Turner and A. Masoud described the cultivation and the morphological variation of Mississippi-grown cannabis in Economic Botany 27 (1973): 117–127 (doi:10.1007/BF02862224). The paper may identify the seed sources and explain the lot codes. It has not been read for this page, and nothing here depends on it.
