Page scope
Togolok-21 covers the Bronze Age site of Togolok-21 in the Murghab delta of Turkmenistan as a cannabis site: the ephedra, cannabis and poppy its excavator reported in the vessels of its white room, the poppy pollen reported from bone tubes and the re-examination that found broomcorn millet. The other Togolok sites appear only as context.

Sources

  • Sarianidi (2003), Electronic Journal of Vedic Studies 9(1): the temple, its white room and fire altar, the reported plant remains, the bone tubes and the date.
  • Bakels (2003), Electronic Journal of Vedic Studies 9(1): the two pieces from a Togolok-21 vessel sent in July 1999 (her picture 1) and examined under the microscope (picture 3), with the Gonur material.
  • Sarianidi (2007), Necropolis of Gonur, p. 174: pollen of ephedra, hemp and poppy in every temple.
  • Billings et al. (2022), Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution 10: the Togolok group, Tepe 2 of Togolok 1, the terracotta pipes and the citation of Bakels.
  • Ren et al. (2019), Science Advances 5: the bone tube and the later reading.

Source discrepancies

  • Name. Togolok-21 (Sarianidi, Bakels), Togolok 21 (Billings et al., Ren et al.). The title follows the excavator.
  • Title of Sarianidi's 1998 book. Margiana and Protozoroastrism in Bakels; Margiana and Protozoroastrianism in Sarianidi's own bibliography of 2003. The article gives Bakels's form.
  • What Bakels saw. Bakels matched only her Gonur material to Meyer-Melikyan and Avetov's photographs; for the Togolok-21 pieces no published photograph is compared. The article says so.
  • Date. Sarianidi dates the temple to the last centuries of the second millennium BCE; Billings et al. give about 2250 to 1700 BCE for the culture as a whole. The article gives both, attributed.

Infobox values

  • Coordinates. None: none of the cited papers publishes them.
  • Dates of the find. Left empty. Sarianidi's date is for the temple, from its architecture, not for the vessel contents.
  • Site type. Settlement. Billings et al. describe a fortified structure and Ren et al. an urban centre; the temple reading is Sarianidi's.
  • Disputed. Set: Bakels found no hemp in the Togolok-21 material.

Georeferencing

No point is given. None of the cited papers prints a position for Togolok-21. Wikidata gives 38.1039° N, 61.9938° E for Togolok 21 (Q110155068), but the same point stands on its item for the whole Togolok group (Q55885896), so it cannot be taken as the position of site 21, and no other gazetteer holds the site.
