Discussion
Evidentiary scope
Read on 10 October 2026:
- the museum's own pages: Historik och byggnad, Om Herbariet and its English version About the Herbarium, The background and history of the collections, Department of Botany, the English loans page for the botanical collections, Öppna data and Om webbplatsen;
- the Herbarium Catalogue at herbarium.nrm.se: the start page (holdings table updated 9 October 2026), the How to page, the page on the processing of personal data, the search for the species name Cannabis (256 entries) and individual records, among them S-MG-361, S07-8826, S07-8831, S07-8836, S07-8837, S08-18704, S08-18806, S09-4661, S12-24461, S21-461, S-A1012-21, S-N081-90, S-PL-21669, S-PLE-E5442 and S-GH-1666;
- Förordning (2007:1176) med instruktion för Naturhistoriska riksmuseet, consolidated to SFS 2026:1468, on riksdagen.se;
- GBIF: the datasets Phanerogamic Botanical Collections (S), Fungi (S), Mosses (S) and Algae (S), all 245 occurrence entries for the genus at this institution, the occurrence entries for the collector D. Hummel, and a full-text search of the phanerogam dataset for "Hedin";
- the Index Herbariorum record for S (modified 18 February 2026) and the GRSciColl institution entry;
- Sven Hedin's History of the Expedition in Asia, 1927–1935 and Einar Lönnberg's 1931 note in Fauna och flora, as cited.
The museum's published history of 1916 (Naturhistoriska riksmuseets historia) was not read. The collections portal samlingar.nrm.se loads its content by script and was not used. Éloise 06:42, 10 October 2026 (+07)
Source discrepancies
Each divergence is reported as the source gives it. The article does not choose between them unless it says so.
- Founding
- The museum's timeline: the Academy's first meeting and first natural history object in 1739; the museum "instiftas officiellt" (formally instituted) in 1819.
- Index Herbariorum and GRSciColl: herbarium founded 1739.
- The English page The background and history of the collections: the earliest botanical and mycological collections are "from the late 16th century".
- The article and infobox give 1819 for the museum and describe the collections from 1739. The late-16th-century date presumably refers to the age of the oldest specimens; no specimen of that age was checked.
- Size of the herbarium
- The catalogue's start page (updated 9 October 2026): 4,434,000 specimens.
- Om Herbariet and About the Herbarium: more than 4.4 million.
- Department of Botany: about 4.5 million, and about three million vascular plants.
- Index Herbariorum: 4,570,000, with no date for the figure.
- Mosses
- Om Herbariet: about 9,000 species and 720,000 specimens.
- About the Herbarium: about 90,000 species and 720,000 specimens. The Swedish figure is the plausible one; the article gives neither.
- Address of the Department of Botany
- Index Herbariorum: Svante Arrhenius väg 3.
- Department of Botany: Svante Arrhenius väg 13. The article gives neither.
- Visits to the collections
- The catalogue's start page and the loans page, both read in October 2026, still say that visits would reopen gradually "during the second half of 2025". The article reports the statement as the museum makes it.
- Licence of the specimen images
- GBIF, dataset Phanerogamic Botanical Collections (S): CC BY 4.0; the dataset's media entries carry CC BY 4.0 with a named photographer, for example "Dennis Strid (S)" on S-GH-1666.
- Öppna data: as a state agency the museum's data are generally open and public domain (CC0), with exceptions; all data and datasets carry open Creative Commons licences.
- Om webbplatsen: text and images on the museum's website are protected by copyright; reuse by request.
- The scanned sheets carry a scale bar with "Naturhistoriska riksmuseet" and "copyright reserved" (seen on S-GH-1666 at the media service's large size).
- The museum's images uploaded to this wiki carry CC BY 4.0, which follows the GBIF dataset and media licence. Éloise 06:42, 10 October 2026 (+07)
Editorial treatment
- Title. The museum's own English name, the form the accessions' repository field already uses. Naturhistoriska riksmuseet is given in the lead.
- Counts. The catalogue and GBIF counts are those of 10 October 2026 and will change as registration goes on. The catalogue search returns 256 entries; the 11 whose registration numbers begin S-PL are pollen preparations of the palynological collection, which leaves 245 specimens, the same number GBIF lists. The country figures are the catalogue's. The century figures for the Swedish sheets were counted from the catalogue's own collection years.
- Hedin search. The figure of 6,892 records is a full-text search of the phanerogam dataset for "Hedin", limited to 1927–1935. It catches the printed expedition label and may miss records whose label text was not entered.
- Type material. No Cannabis record in the catalogue carries a type status, and none of the 245 GBIF entries does. The article says nothing more about types.
- Identification. The article reports names as the catalogue files them. Five of Hummel's sheets are filed to genus only; the article says no more about their identity than the catalogue does.
- Labels. "Gunjah" and "Bang l. Subjee" are quoted as written. "Ostindien" is the East Indies. S-MG-361's note "Hamp." is the older Swedish spelling of hampa, hemp. The Warrington samples carry no date or first name; nothing in the records says who Mr Warrington was.
- Not linked. Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Gotland, Uppsala, Lidingö, Athens and Frescati are named in plain text, as are A. Münchenberg, J. E. Forsström, Casström, C. Scheppig, Th. von Heldreich, Mr Warrington, G. Samuelsson, Nils Ambolt, Birger Bohlin and F. Bergman. No page is planned for any of them. Olof Swartz, Sven Hedin, the Sino-Swedish Expedition, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Bogda Shan and Stockholm link to Wikipedia. Éloise 06:42, 10 October 2026 (+07)
