Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The typed labels place the plant at the village of Enbekshi on the river Usek, in south-eastern Kazakhstan, at 900 to 1,000 metres, on 8 August 1985. A line by hand adds locis subruderalibus, sponte on the first sheet and sponte in locis subruderalibus on the second (growing of itself, in somewhat ruderal places). The labels give no use and no note on cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the garden's images in Tropicos (724 × 1,086 pixels each, the size the garden serves; legible at word level). The page states only what the readings agree, except where noted.
- Typed (both sheets). URSS, Kazakhstania australi-orientalis / districtus Panfilov, ad pag. Enbekschi / ad fluv. Usjok (Usek), alt. 900-1000 m / 8.VIII.1985 / A.K.Skvortsov.
- By hand. Cannabis sativa L.; and on 105732345 locis subruderalibus, sponte, on 105732403 sponte in locis subruderalibus.
- Stamps. The garden's accession numbers № 4378518 (105732345) and № 4378271 (105732403), read with some doubt at this size.
- Readings that differ. The first reading took the last word on 105732345 as sparsim (scattered); the second read sponte, and a third look on an enlarged crop confirms sponte.
Georeferencing
The point 44.32, 79.89 is the village of Enbekshi, OpenStreetMap node 3365902826, in Panfilov District, Jetisu Region, 0.5 km from the river Usek (way 39372328). SRTM gives 968 m there, and the Russian Wikipedia 969 m, inside the label's 900-1,000 m. A second village of the name, joined to the town of Zharkent in 2009, lies at about 630 m and does not fit the altitude. The area belonged to the Almaty Region until 8 June 2022, when the Jetisu Region was split from it; the province field takes today's unit. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.
Editorial treatment
Two sheets, one accession. The sheets share the collector, the day, the place and the typed label. 105732345 is given first in the infobox.
Image. The holder publishes the sheet's image under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0, a licence that does not allow the image to be copied here; the page cites the image at the holder and carries none.
Elevation. The infobox gives the label's range, 900-1000 m; the catalogue's 950 m is the range's middle.
Collector. The collector field takes the label's A. K. Skvortsov. No source read for this page gives his full name, and he is not linked.
