Evidentiary scope

The label gives the place, the date, the collector and a note that the plant was a herb with white flowers. It names no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557941, 986 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Form (printed PLANTS OF SHANTUNG / 山東省植物名錄 / HERBARIUM, UNIVERSITY OF TSINGTAO / 國立青島大學植物標本室, completed by hand): Locality 柳樹台 / Tree, shrub … herb: ticked at herb / Flower white / Special notes Cannabis sativa L. / Field No. 436 / Collector F. H. Sha / Date VII / 16 / 1932.
  • Tag. 436. Fan Memorial Institute label: Herb. No. 28171 (red). Determination slip: Cannabilis sativa L. / 定名人 (blank) / 72年4月12日.
  • SHANTUNG province stamp; stamped number 01926746.

The two readings agree; the second marks the last two characters of the place uncertain (柳樹[?]臺[?]).

Georeferencing

柳樹台 (simplified 柳树台, Liushutai) is a village on Lao Shan, east of Qingdao: the point 36.20, 120.58 is its place node in OpenStreetMap (node 5503085059). The match is by the characters as read. Other villages named 柳树台 lie in Ningxia and Shaanxi (Wikidata), outside the province the form names; this one lies in the Lao Shan hills behind Qingdao, where the university stood. SRTM gives 382 m at the node, and the label gives no altitude. The point stands for the village and its surroundings, not a spot within them. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 4 km.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's F. H. Sha. No source on him was found: the Harvard botanist index lists no F. H. Sha. The name is not linked.

Date. The form gives 16 July 1932, which is stored.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
