Evidentiary scope

Harvard's entry for the sheet gives a place and a date and nothing about habitat, cultivation or the plant. With no evidence of how the plant grew, the accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned. Other numbers of the same week describe cannabis in a field near Kandahar (26507) and an escape in a formerly irrigated field (26505); they do not say where 26503 grew.

Label reading

The sheet has not been seen, and Harvard has published no image of it. The fields above are Harvard's transcription in its specimen index, read on 15 October 2026 (barcode 00429205): locality Near Kandahar; date 1971-12-13 to 1971-12-20; collector R. E. Schultes; collector number 26503; accession number ECON 21506; filed under Cannabis L., with Small's determination as the current name. Small and Cronquist cite a duplicate at the Ottawa herbarium (DAO). It is not in GBIF, and its label has not been read.

Georeferencing

The point 31.62, 65.72 is the city of Kandahar, OpenStreetMap node 97993575 (Wikidata Q45604 puts it at 31.62068, 65.71588). The catalogue's Near Kandahar names the city and no place near it. The city's area in Wikidata is about 800 km², a radius of about 16 km, and near allows the gathering to lie somewhat beyond it, so the uncertainty is put at about 20 km. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 20 km.

Editorial treatment

The title takes Schultes's number 26503. Harvard's index gives it as the collector number, and Small and Cronquist cite it as Schultes 26503. The collection date is stored to the month, December 1971, because the catalogue gives a range, 13–20 December, as it does for the other numbers of that week. The collector field takes R.E. Schultes, as on Schultes 26505 (1971). The province field takes Kandahar Province. The scientific name is Ernest Small's determination of 16 March 1976.
