Discussion

Evidentiary scope

Harvard's index gives a route, a range of dates and a number. It records no collector, habitat, use or note on cultivation. McPartland and Small add the name Schlagintweit and a day, and file the sheet under var. himalayensis, a determination from the plant, not a statement of how it grew. The accession is classified Unknown. It does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The index gives a route, Das via Goltere or Naugaum to Hasora or Astor, under the heading Province: Hasora. Only its end is a mapped place: Astor is the town of Astore (OpenStreetMap node 2777265389), in Astore District, Gilgit-Baltistan. Das, Goltere and Naugaum are not matched to mapped places, so the route cannot be drawn and the plant may have been gathered anywhere along it. The province field takes Gilgit-Baltistan, in which the route's end lies, and the locality field the label's own heading, Hasora.

Editorial treatment

Country. Harvard's index gives India, under its heading Asia: India (Region). Astore lies in Gilgit-Baltistan, administered by Pakistan, and the page follows the place, as McPartland and Small's list does.

Title. The title takes the number Harvard's index gives, 6377, and the year.

Date. The range runs from 8 to 20 September 1856; McPartland and Small give its last day. The field stores the month.

Collector. Harvard's index enters no collector ([no data available]). The collector field gives the surname McPartland and Small give, as on the other Schlagintweit pages.

Image. Harvard's index publishes no image of the sheet. The page's values are the index's and McPartland and Small's.

Source discrepancies

  • Harvard's index gives the country as India. McPartland and Small file the sheet under Pakistan in their list of var. himalayensis, and under Tibet in their discussion of Tibetan specimens, where they give its herbarium as GW.
