Evidentiary scope

The foot of the printed label reads From the Government Botanical Garden, Sahâranpur, and the label is annotated Saharanpur district. Its head reads Medicinal & fibre plant and it gives the vernacular name Vern. Bhang. The label is numbered 31 and the catalogue dates the sheet 10 September 1889; it names no collector and gives no altitude. It does not say where in the district the plant grew, whether it was cultivated, or whether it came from the garden's own beds, so the accession is classified Unknown. No conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The label names Saharanpur district and no place within it. The district of 1889 is not today's: Haridwar District was formed from it in 1988 and lies in Uttarakhand (English Wikipedia, Haridwar district), so today's Saharanpur District, in Uttar Pradesh, is a smaller area than the one the label names, and no boundary of the district of 1889 has been found to take a point from. The label's From the Government Botanical Garden, Sahâranpur names the garden that sent the sheet, not the place the plant grew. An earlier version of this note gave no point because the label gives no place within the district.

Editorial treatment

The date rests on the catalogue's reading of the annotation No. 10.9 89 as 10 September 1889. The annotation is prefixed No. and has no stop between 9 and 89, so it may be a register number instead of a date. No other RBGE sheet catalogued under 10 September 1889 comes from Saharanpur, so there is no sibling label to compare. The date is kept as catalogued until the annotation is read otherwise. If it is a number, the sheet is undated and the title changes.
