Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places cannabis on the eastern slopes of the Likiang Snow Range in 1923–24 and gives nothing more: no altitude, habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high).

  • Label (printed, completed by hand): PLANTS OF YUNNAN, CHINA / Cannabis sativa, Linn. det: H. Edgar Evans / Eastern slopes of Likiang Snow Range, Yangtze watershed / No. 10802 J. F. ROCK, Collector 1923–24.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted. The Likiang Snow Range is the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan, Wikidata Q1465660) north of Lijiang; SRTM gives 5,397 m at Wikidata's point, in the summit area. A mountain range gives no collection point, and the label gives no altitude. The province field takes Yunnan.

Editorial treatment

Date. The label gives a span, 1923–24. No date is stored, and the title takes the span.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's J. F. Rock. He is Joseph Francis Charles Rock (1884–1962), the Austrian-American botanist and explorer, who reached Lijiang in 1922 and made it his base (English Wikipedia); H.-L. Li (Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 100, 1948) dates his National Geographic Society collecting in north-western Yunnan to 1922–24. The prose links that form.

Determiner. H. Edgar Evans was not found in the Harvard botanist index or elsewhere; the name stays in plain text.

Source discrepancies

  • Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the label.
