Where the paper's figures differ from its sources
The paper's Chilean figures were checked against the sources it cites, where those could be read. The Chile page follows the sources and gives the paper's own readings as his.
- The first order on hemp in the Indies. The paper (p. 46) gives a royal order of 13 June 1554 to the viceroys of Peru and New Spain, after Serrera Contreras. The Recopilación de leyes de Indias (book IV, title 18, law 20) and Gay (1865) date the order to 13 June 1545.
- Machado's figure of 1614. The paper (p. 49) gives 1,270 quintals of hemp a year for the valley of Quillota. Its note cites a web page that quotes Vázquez de Espinosa. The Compendio itself (Clark's edition of 1948, p. 677) gives the 1,270 quintals for the year of Machado's inspection, 1614, and adds that more was being sown at the time of writing.
- The workshop at Quillota in 1605. The paper (p. 52) presents the inventory as taken by the visitor Gregorio Sánchez, of a workshop making both woollen cloth and cordage. Góngora (1970, p. 30), whom it cites, gives the inventory's source as a notarial will; the visit by Sánchez that Góngora describes (p. 25) concerns Luis Jufré's encomienda.
- Where Quillota lies. The paper (p. 53) places Quillota close to the port of Concepción. Its own map (p. 51) shows Quillota north-west of Santiago, towards Valparaíso.
- Table 1, Martín de Espinosa's proposal of 1644. Góngora (pp. 215–216) sums the quintals of cordage for six districts but gives no sum for La Ligua and no grand total. The table's La Ligua figure (1,950) and its total (32,150) are the paper's own sums. The paper treats the list as a projection of capacity.
- Table 2, cordage exports at Valparaíso, 1622–1655. The table gives 546 quintals for 1641 and a total of 4,045. Góngora's table (p. 224), its source, gives 646 for 1641 and prints no total.
- Forster (1996), cited for the suggestion that the seed sent from Spain suited Chile and not the tropics, is an article without references in the Journal of the International Hemp Association.
The author's later figures
- The author's paper with Antonio José Rodríguez Hernández (2017, p. 12) reports Governor Córdoba y Arce's letter of February 1627 as giving about 8,000 quintals a year for the valleys of Quillota and La Ligua. His paper of 2018 (p. 276) writes that the Chilean harvest always stayed below 100 tonnes a year. His paper of 2019 in Espacio, Tiempo y Forma gives about 90 tonnes a year, citing the same letter. None of the three gives a conversion between quintals and tonnes.
- Some later citations of this paper give its title as "(siglos XVI–XVIII)". The title page reads "(siglos XVI–XVII)".
