Discussion
Evidentiary scope
Harvard's index records the plant as an Escaped weed, growing at edge of cultivated ground. An escape at the edge of a cultivated plot grew outside cultivation, and the accession is classified Feral, by inference from the catalogue. The catalogue does not say what was being cultivated beside it, or whether that was cannabis. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
The sheet has not been seen, and Harvard has published no image of it. The fields above are Harvard's transcription in its specimen index, read on 15 October 2026 (barcode 00946341): locality Roxbury; geography Massachusetts: Suffolk County: Boston; date 1973-10-03; habitat Escaped weed, growing at edge of cultivated ground; collector T. C. Plowman, with no collector number; accession number ECON 36123.
Georeferencing
The point 42.33, −71.09 is the middle of the Roxbury neighbourhood of Boston, OpenStreetMap relation 4033679 (Wikidata Q20138 puts it at 42.325, −71.0953). The catalogue names the neighbourhood and no spot within it. The neighbourhood's outline in OpenStreetMap spans about 5.5 km north to south and 3.4 km east to west. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 4 km.
Editorial treatment
Harvard dates the sheet 3 October 1973. Plowman's sheets at the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Smithsonian, also from Roxbury and also without a number, are dated 1 October 1973 and describe a spontaneous herb 3 m. tall growing in waste area. (Plowman s.n., Roxbury (1973), MO 2605928). The dates and the descriptions of the plant differ, so the two are kept as separate gatherings. Both titles add the holder's catalogue number, because the title form for a sheet with no collector number would otherwise be the same for both.
The collector field takes T.C. Plowman, the form the wiki's other Plowman accessions use. The province field takes Massachusetts; Harvard's county, Suffolk, is not entered as a field.
