Discussion

Evidentiary scope

Harvard's index records the plant as cultivated in greenhouse at Bogotá's botanical garden, and Plowman's notebook as Cult. Jardin Botanico de Bogota. Neither says where the seed came from or why the garden grew the plant. A plant raised under glass in a botanical garden is not a crop of the place, so the accession is classified Other, by inference from the catalogue and the notebook. No conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

The sheets have not been seen, and Harvard has published no image of them. The fields above are Harvard's transcription in its specimen index, read on 15 October 2026, for barcodes 00947318 and 00947319:

  • Locality Districto Especial. Jardin Botanico "Jose Celestino Mutis" Bogota
  • Habitat cultivated in greenhouse
  • Date 1974-06-06; collector T. C. Plowman; number 3767

Neither record gives an accession number.

Field notebook

Plowman's notebook for numbers 3500–3767 (Field Museum of Natural History Library, BOT_Plowman006; image n113 of the Internet Archive scan) has the entry:

  • 3767. Cannabis sativa, with (2) below the name
  • ECON(2) in the left margin
  • Cult. Jardin Botanico de Bogota.

The entry has no date of its own. The last dated heading before it is 6 junio 1974, for number 3754 in Tolima; the headings between, in Cundinamarca, carry no date. Harvard's date of 6 June 1974 agrees with that heading. The (2) and ECON(2) agree with the two sheets Harvard holds. The entry below it on the same page, 3767-A, is a Canna grown in a greenhouse at Woburn, Massachusetts, dated 4 March 1974.

Georeferencing

The point 4.67, −74.10 is the Jardín Botánico José Celestino Mutis, OpenStreetMap way 24587421 (Wikidata Q979670, whose point is 4.668211, −74.100198). The garden covers about 19.5 hectares, so any spot in it lies within about 250 m of the point; with the two-decimal form, the uncertainty is about 1 km. The point is the garden's present grounds. No source read for this page says whether its greenhouses stood there in 1974. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 1 km.

Editorial treatment

The title takes Plowman's number 3767 and the year of the gathering. The collector field takes T.C. Plowman, the form the wiki's other Plowman accessions use. The province field takes Bogotá, in which the garden lies. The scientific name is Ernest Small's determination of 16 February 1976, under which Harvard files both sheets.
