Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The catalogue transcribes the label's station as In fruticetis ad radicem montis Fuzi Jama ins Nippon (in thickets at the foot of Mount Fuji, on the island of Nippon). The label itself has not been seen. The plant grew in thickets, a natural habitat, and the transcription gives no word of cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the catalogue's transcription of the label; it does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Not read: the holder publishes no image of the sheet. The page reports the catalogue's fields as the Naturalis Biodiversity Center gives them (read 12 October 2026): unit L 0420306; collector Pierot, J; number 846; country Japan; locality In fruticetis ad radicem montis Fuzi Jama ins Nippon. Japonia.; basis Herbarium sheet; determination Cannabis sativa L.; province Honshu; no date or coordinates.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The label places the plant at the foot of Mount Fuji (ad radicem montis Fuzi Jama). The mountain stands on the line between Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures (English Wikipedia), and its foot runs through municipalities of both: Fujiyoshida and Narusawa in Yamanashi; Fujinomiya, Fuji, Susono, Gotemba and Oyama in Shizuoka (Japanese Wikipedia). The label names no side of the mountain, so neither a prefecture nor a point on that ring can be chosen; the summit (OpenStreetMap node 714354378) is not where the plant grew.

Editorial treatment

Catalogue only. The accession is made from the holder's catalogue alone, with no image; every fact on the page is the catalogue's, and the label may hold more than the catalogue transcribes.

Title. Jacques Pierot lived from 1812 to 1841 (Harvard Index of Botanists; Wikidata), so a sheet in his name is no later than 1841, the limit the title gives. The Japanese Wikipedia says that he took his medical degree at Leiden in 1839 and left for Nagasaki in September 1840, but was shipwrecked on the way, turned back to Macao, and afterwards fell ill and died. No source read places him in Japan. The same article reports that the Japanese plant specimens under Pierot's name in the Siebold collection are said to have been bought from the gatherings of Heinrich Bürger, Siebold's assistant in Japan. No source read says whether that applies to this sheet; the page names Pierot, as the catalogue does.

Collector. The collector field takes J. Pierot, the catalogue's Pierot, J in initials form, and the number field the catalogue's 846; the prose links his biography.

Place. The locality field gives the transcription's place in English, Thickets at the foot of Mount Fuji, Honshu; the label's spelling Fuzi Jama is kept in the quotation. The province field is empty: the foot of the mountain lies in two prefectures.

Source discrepancies

  • None. GBIF gives the collector, number, place and determination that the Naturalis catalogue gives.
