Page scope
Pharmacopoeia of India (1868) covers Waring's Pharmacopœia of India (London, 1868) as a whole and, in detail, its monograph on Cannabis sativa (p. 216), the appendix note on it (pp. 463–464) and the other places the volume names Indian hemp. The catalogue of vernacular names issued separately in 1869 is covered at Supplement to the Pharmacopoeia of India (1869). Waring himself is to be covered at Edward John Waring. The bare title Pharmacopoeia of India redirects here.

How the work was read

  • The text was read in the full-text capture of the Internet Archive scan pharmacopoeiaofi00wariuoft. Every quotation in the article, and every page number used for the preface, the reporters' list, the monograph, the classified catalogue and appendix note 65, was then checked on the page images of the Wellcome Collection's digitised copy (Wellcome work jrxxbk9f, IIIF manifest b2146604x): title page, contents, preface pp. v, ix and x, p. xiii, pp. 180, 216, 401, 406 and 463–464. The two copies agree at every point checked. The locators pp. 49, 217, 264 and 438 come from the running heads of the text capture.
  • The copy held in the infobox is the one the Wellcome Collection digitised. The Wellcome record states that the original may be consulted at the University of Glasgow Library, and the title page carries the stamp of the Glasgow University Library. The Wellcome copy is offered under the Public Domain Mark.
  • Wight's part in the committee comes from Cleghorn's obituary of Wight (1873), pp. 384–385, which prints notes supplied by Waring. Read in the Zenodo copy of the article.
  • Watt's use of the monograph was read in the House of Commons return of 1893, which reprints Watt's Cannabis sativa article; the passage is on p. 171 (Gokhale Institute scan, where the printed page is the PDF page less one). Two independent text captures of that page agree.

Particular readings

  • Note reference. The reference mark after "require confirmation" on p. 216 prints as (65). It answers appendix note 65, headed "Cannabis Sativa (Medical Properties of, &c.)", pp. 463–464.
  • Kohi bung. The vowel of the first word is unclear on the p. 180 image (an accent may stand over the i). The article quotes it without an accent.
  • British Pharmacopoeia date. The preface names "the British Pharmacopoeia issued by the Medical Council of England in 1865" and its edition of 1867. The article does not repeat either date.
  • Reporters. The list on pp. xiii–xiv names 27 people under Bengal, 18 under Madras and six under Bombay, then eight more correspondents in a closing paragraph who are not counted in the 51.
  • Spellings. The monograph's own forms are kept in quotation: Gunjah, Churrus, Bang, Subjee, Sidhee, Majoon; Christison's note prints Bhang.
