Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant in the Karabakh autonomous region in 1936. It gives no place within the region, no date within the year, no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3679 × 5298 pixels).

  • Printed form as on Petrov s.n., Karabakh (1934).
  • By hand. Cannabis sativa L. (pencil) / the figure 6 after the printed 193. No day, month or altitude.
  • A pencilled 389 on the sheet below the label's lower left corner is not explained on the sheet and is not used.
  • The stamped number 7522 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The label names only the Regio autonoma Karabagh, the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast of 1923 to 1991, a historical unit that covered 4,161 km² at its formation. OpenStreetMap has no boundary for it, and the present-day districts that cover its ground (Khankendi, Khojaly, Shusha, Khojavend and others) do not follow its outline, so no middle can be taken for it. No province is entered for the same reason. The herbarium's database gives no point for this sheet.

Editorial treatment

Collectors and place as for Petrov s.n., Karabakh (1934); here the catalogue names both Petrovs.
