Discussion

Name

The Federal Court judgments of June and September 1991 and the United States Department of Justice report of 1991 give Nevil Martin Schoenmakers. The Full Court's orders of 2 August 1991 spell Neville. His own submission of 2013 and the death notice use Nevil.

Year of birth

French J's reasons of 21 June 1991 say he was born in Western Australia in 1958. Leaf Nation (2022) gives 2 February 1957, in Perth; Leafly and The Georgia Straight (2019) give 1957 and an age of 62 at his death; the death notice in The West Australian gives 2 February 1956. The article gives the sources' years without choosing.

Move to the Netherlands

The 1991 judgment says he went to Holland in or about 1977, at about 19. Leafly and The Georgia Straight say 1976.

Founding of The Seed Bank

Leaf Nation dates the founding to 1983; The Georgia Straight and the Cannabis Cup Winners site to 1984, with a first classified advertisement in High Times in July 1984. Steven Hager's High Times feature of 1987, Inside Cannabis Castle, has been read only as a forum repost and is not cited.

Dates of the arrest and of the American case

The judgment dates the arrest to 23 July 1990; The Georgia Straight says 24 July and Leaf Nation June 24. The Department of Justice report of 1991 says that he was arrested and extradited; the Federal Court record shows that he was never surrendered. CourtListener's index lists a case United States v. Schoenmakers in the Eastern District of Louisiana (2:90-cr-00055), filed 9 February 1990 and terminated 18 October 2007; the docket itself could not be opened. Leaf Nation says that around 2003 he learned the case had been dropped.

The outcome of the appeal

The Full Court ordered on 2 August 1991 that the appeal stand dismissed unless he appeared by 9 August 1991. Foster J's judgment of 26 September 1991 ([1991] FCA 603) dealt with the forfeiture of the recognisance. No later order on the appeal has been read.

Persons named in the sources

The judgments and the death notice name members of his family and the sureties for his bail. They are private persons and are not named in the article.

G-13

The 1987 catalogue has not been found; its wording is known from SeedFinder's quotation. The other tellings come from a retailer's blog (2023) and a forum post (2022), and are given as tellings. See the G13 section of University of Mississippi for the full set of accounts.
