Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 62165 (Inventory No. 81 (1927), p. 24) and the entry for PI 62165 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the collector, his number, the date and the temple grounds, and nothing on the plants. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.

Identifier

The identifier NPG-CHN-UNK-1019240001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 62165.

  • NPG stands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.
  • CHN is the ISO code for China.
  • UNK: no province is recorded.
  • Month 10: October, the month the seed was gathered.
  • Year 1924 is the year the seed was gathered.
  • 0001 is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.

Classification

The seed came from temple grounds, and the entry does not say whether the plants were sown or grew of themselves, so the accession is classified Unknown.

Collectors and donors

The inventory heads the consignment "Seeds collected by P. H. Dorsett", and GRIN-Global lists him as collector, so he is given as collector.

Location and georeferencing

The inventory names the grounds of the Fa Hua Ssu temple near Hai-tzu, in Chihli. Neither the temple nor Hai-tzu has been matched to a place on today's map: Chihli took in today's Hebei, Beijing and Tianjin, and temples of the name stood in several places. The page has no point and no province, and the map is off.

Dates

The collection date, 11 October 1924, is the date of Dorsett's number as both sources give it. Both give the month of receipt only, December 1924, which is the received date.
