Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 39424 (Inventory No. 41 (1917), p. 26) and the entry for PI 39424 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the collector, his number, the date, the city and a description of where the crop is grown. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.
Identifier
The identifier NPG-CHN-SHX-0719140001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 39424.
NPGstands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.CHNis the ISO code for China.SHXstands for Shanxi.- Month
07: July, the month the seed was gathered. - Year 1914 is the year the seed was gathered.
0001is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.
Classification
Meyer's note describes the variety as grown on terraces at the altitudes of the district he names, so the accession is classified Landrace.
Collectors and donors
The inventory heads the consignment "Collected by Mr. Frank N. Meyer", and GRIN-Global lists him as collector, so he is given as collector.
Location and georeferencing
Luanfu was the prefectural city now called Changzhi. The point 36.20, 113.12 is the point of the wiki's Changzhi page, the city itself. Meyer's note puts the crop on terraces between 3,000 and 4,000 feet, in the hills round the city, so the point marks the town he names, not a field. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 10 km.
Dates
The collection date, 13 July 1914, is the date of Meyer's number as both sources give it. The department received the consignment on 17 November 1914, the lot's received date.
