Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 22690 (Inventory No. 15 (1909), pp. 23, 25) and the entry for PI 22690 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the collector, his number, the date, the village and district, a Chinese name and a description of the crop and its trade. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.

Identifier

The identifier NPG-CHN-SHX-0319080001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 22690.

  • NPG stands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.
  • CHN is the ISO code for China.
  • SHX stands for Shanxi.
  • Month 03: March, the month the seed was gathered.
  • Year 1908 is the year the seed was gathered.
  • 0001 is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.

Classification

Meyer's note says the hemp is grown in the mountain valleys of the district he names and sold for string and rope, so the accession is classified Landrace.

Collectors and donors

The inventory gives the seed as Meyer's number 932a with his note, and GRIN-Global lists him as collector, so he is given as collector.

Name

The note gives the Chinese name as Shan ma tse, unglossed; it is entered as the local name.

Location and georeferencing

The note names the village of Tongchor in the Kwohsien district of Shansi. The village has not been matched to a place on today's map. Kwohsien, the old Guo county, lies within today's Yuanping, a county-level city of Shanxi; the point 38.73, 112.70 is the point OpenStreetMap gives for Yuanping (relation 3008568), taken as an area point for the district, not the village. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 30 km, the radius of Yuanping's area (about 2,600 km²).

Dates

The collection date, 4 March 1908, is the date of Meyer's number as both sources give it. The department received the consignment on 20 April 1908, the lot's received date.
