Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 20056 (Inventory No. 13 (1908), pp. 59, 64) and the entry for PI 20056 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the collector, his number, the date, the place and a note on how the crop was grown. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.

Identifier

The identifier NPG-CHN-LIA-0619060001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 20056.

  • NPG stands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.
  • CHN is the ISO code for China.
  • LIA stands for Liaoning.
  • Month 06: June, the month the seed was gathered.
  • Year 1906 is the year the seed was gathered.
  • 0001 is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.

Classification

Meyer's note describes the crop of the plain the seed came from and how it was sown and cut, so the accession is classified Landrace.

Collectors and donors

The inventory gives the seed as Meyer's number 281a with his note, and GRIN-Global lists him as collector, so he is given as collector.

Location and georeferencing

The inventory names Yentai, on the plain between Mukden and Liaoyang, and nothing finer. The point 41.43, 123.32 is the point OpenStreetMap gives for Yantai subdistrict of Dengta, Liaoyang, on the railway between the two cities (relation 9645702), a locality georeference for the place the source names, not a collection point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 4 km, the subdistrict's extent plus 1 km for the two-decimal form. GRIN-Global gives Shandong, the province of the better-known Yantai on the coast; the note's Yentai lies between Mukden and Liaoyang, so the province entered is Liaoning.

Dates

The collection date, 1 June 1906, is the date of Meyer's number as both sources give it. The department received the consignment on 20 February 1907, the lot's received date.
