Evidentiary scope

The accession rests on two sources: the department's printed inventory entry for plant introduction 21780 (Inventory No. 14 (1909), p. 13) and the entry for PI 21780 in GRIN-Global, the database of the National Plant Germplasm System, as it stood on 27 October 2026. The inventory gives the collector, his number, the date, the district and a description of the crop and its uses. GRIN-Global states that the lot "no longer exists and can not be requested", so the page gives the lot as gone. No conservation priority is assigned.

Identifier

The identifier NPG-CHN-HUB-1219070001 follows the wiki's seed-accession grammar: holder, ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country, province segment, month, year, sequence. The department's own number for the lot is PI 21780.

  • NPG stands for the National Plant Germplasm System of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose database, GRIN-Global, carries the department's plant introductions.
  • CHN is the ISO code for China.
  • HUB stands for Hubei.
  • Month 12: December, the month the seed was gathered.
  • Year 1907 is the year the seed was gathered.
  • 0001 is the lot's place, in plant-introduction order, among the holder's lots from the same country, province, month and year.

Classification

Wilson's note describes a crop grown by peasants and farmers in the mountains around the town he names, so the accession is classified Landrace.

Collectors and donors

The inventory says the seed was "Secured by Mr. E. H. Wilson" and gives his number and date, and GRIN-Global lists him as collector, so he is given as collector.

Name

The note gives the local name as Tung ma and glosses it as "cold hemp"; it is entered as the local name.

Location and georeferencing

Wilson names the mountains north and south of Ichang, between 3,000 and 5,000 feet, and no village. The point 30.69, 111.28 is the point OpenStreetMap gives for Yichang (relation 2983923), the city the note names, taken as an area point for the hill country round it, not a field. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 40 km, enough to take in the hills on both sides of the city.

Dates

The collection date, 8 December 1907, is the date of Wilson's number in the inventory. The inventory gives the month of receipt, January 1908, and GRIN-Global gives 9 January 1908, which is used as the received date.
