Page scope
Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle is about the institution as a holder of Cannabis material, above all its herbarium (P). The sheets themselves have their own accession pages, and the article lists them.
Sourcing
The museum's specimen data are taken from what it publishes through GBIF. Its status comes from the French evaluation agency's report and official texts; its history from a paper by its herbarium staff and an encyclopedia article. Discuss attribution, independent sourcing and any claim that has lost its attribution here.
Discussion
Source discrepancies
Each divergence is reported as the source gives it.
- Founding of the royal garden
- Hcéres: "créé par édit en 1626". The Ministry of Ecological Transition: Louis XIII created it in 1626.
- Le Bras et al. (2017): "founded 1635". The Encyclopædia Universalis: "créé en 1635 sous Louis XIII". Index Herbariorum and GBIF's GRSciColl entry: 1635.
- The article reports both years with their sources.
- The text that governs the museum
- The visitor site's legal notice: "régi par le décret n°2001-916 du 3 octobre 2001 modifié".
- The Sélection du JORF of 29 December 2023 lists decree 2023-1321, in force from 1 January 2024, as repealing decree 2001-916. The current text is the Code de la recherche, articles R353-1 onwards.
- R353-1 names the supervising ministers in the order higher education, environment, research; D717-2 of the Code de l'éducation in the order higher education, research, environment.
- Size of the herbarium
- Index Herbariorum: 6,000,000 for P.
- Le Bras et al. (2017): about 6 million at P; about 8 million with the non-vascular collection (PC); about 5.4 million in the dataset.
- The GBIF dataset description: "estimated at 8 million".
- The Encyclopædia Universalis: about eight million plants and fungi, and a building capacity of 6 million.
- Type specimens
- Le Bras et al.: an estimated 200,000. The Encyclopædia Universalis: 400,000. Index Herbariorum: typeSpecimensTotal 0.
- The herbarium building and its renovation
- The Encyclopædia Universalis: built from 1931, in use in 1935–36; renovated 2009–2013.
- Le Bras et al.: renovated 2008–2012 in one passage and 2008–2013 in another (the Renobota project). The article uses 2008 to 2013.
- The Cannabis indica holotype
- McPartland and Small (2020): "India, likely Pondicherry, Lamarck, no date, annotated “Chanvre rapporte de l’Inde par M. Sonnerat” (herb. P)". The paper gives no barcode.
- The museum's catalogue record MNHN-P-P00562707: "HOLOTYPE", Cannabis indica Lam., sector "HIS (Historical herbaria)", collection "Herbier de Lamarck", "Acquis en Novembre 1886", collector "P. Sonnerat", country "Inde", locality "s.loc.", no date. The GBIF copy of the record carries the same type status, collector and remark but not the collection name. It is the only typified Cannabis entry among the 314. GBIF's type-status facet counts it twice ("Holotype" and "Type"), but both filters return this one entry.
- The article identifies the sheet with the cited holotype on the strength of the museum's own type status on that entry.
- The paper names Lamarck in the holotype line and Sonnerat in the annotation; GBIF names Sonnerat as collector.
- The catalogue files the sheet in the Herbier de Lamarck. The CNRS Lamarck portal says Lamarck's herbarium was bought back by the museum in 1886. The article reports both facts with their sources and draws no further inference from the matching year.
- The year of publication: McPartland and Small give the Encyclopédie méthodique 1(2): 694–695, 1785. The Flora of Thailand (1981) cites "Enc. 1: 695. 1783".
- Image licences
- GBIF publishes the dataset under CC BY 4.0. Images are licensed sheet by sheet: of the 327 images on the Cannabis entries, 280 are CC BY 4.0 and 47 CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.
- The holotype's image is CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, credited to V. Durand. It is not on this wiki: the licence forbids derivatives. Éloise 23:49, 4 October 2026 (+07)
Editorial treatment
- Title. The curly apostrophe (’) follows the museum's own legal notice and the value the accessions already carry. Index Herbariorum, GBIF and the Code de la recherche write a straight apostrophe, and capitalisation varies (d’histoire, d’Histoire, National d'Histoire Naturelle). A redirect from the straight-apostrophe form keeps both spellings working.
- Leaf sampling. The remark "Prélèvement de feuille pour Grassa C.J., Harvard, USA, 03/2021, demande 156515" appears on 24 of the 314 entries. It names no publication. The article reports the sampling and nothing about its results.
- Counts. GBIF lists 314 occurrence entries for the genus Cannabis at the museum. Its counts are those of 4 October 2026. Éloise 23:49, 4 October 2026 (+07)
