Discussion
Why the area is on the map
- Younas and colleagues (2024) sampled wild hemp at six places in these hills in June and July 2023: Murree, Lower Topa, Bhorban, Pagwari, Patriata and Kotli Satian.
- The Potohar Plateau growing region is drawn without Murree District, so the hills had no growing area of their own.
- The area is a tract of wild hemp. None of the sources used here records hemp sown for the drug in it.
Growing status
- The status is Active: wild populations were sampled at six places in 2023. No source says the wild growth has ended.
Name and border
- "Murree Hills" is the plain name of the hill block; none of the sources used here gives the tract a name of its own.
- The border follows Murree District as mapped in OpenStreetMap (relation 16341589), which is made up of the Murree and Kotli Sattian tehsils; about 730 km².
- The rule that leaves out ground above 4,000 m and land that ESA WorldCover 2021 maps as bare or sparse vegetation, permanent snow and ice, or open water moves the line by less than 0.5 per cent here, so the district line is kept.
- The point in the infobox is a point inside the border near its centre.
Accessions and news inside the border
- NPG-PAK-UNK-0020230002, the seed lot from Murree held by the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System, is filed under this area. Its donor describes it as a wild type.
Sources
- Younas and colleagues (2024). The paper and its Table 1 of localities. The point they give for Kohala falls just outside the border, so Kohala is counted in the region, not in this area.
Other reports
- Before the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission (1893–94), an assistant surgeon serving in Jhang said that hemp grew wild "in the hills from Murree to Kashmir". He did not live in the hills, and his statement is not used.
- A floristic study of the Murree–Kotli Sattian–Kahuta National Park (Ahmed and colleagues, 2019) lists Cannabis sativa among the park's plants, with no place or abundance; it is not used.
