Evidentiary scope
The sheet places the plant at Salé in June 1912, on rubble or waste ground. The label does not say the plant was grown, and it records no use and no local name. In Pitard's 1913 list of Mouret's plants, some entries are marked planté (the Celtis australis entry directly above this one is one), and this entry carries no such mark. The accession is classified Other. A ruderal plant on waste ground in a town could also be classed as feral, but the label does not say where the plant came from. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from the museum's scan at full resolution (3043 × 4814 pixels).
- Printed form. Flore du Maroc at the head; C. J. Pitard. printed at the foot.
- Manuscript. 1365 / Cann[…]tiva (a leaf fragment lies across the name) / Salé, décombres / leg. Mouret. / VI. 1912 (the VI and the final 2 in manuscript, 191 printed).
- Stamp. Muséum d'Histoire naturelle · Phanérogamie · de Paris.
Georeferencing
The label names the town of Salé and a habitat, not a site within the town. The coordinate is the town's point on Wikidata (item Q466046), 34.05, −6.82, which stands for the town and not for the place where the plant grew. Salé lies in Salé Prefecture, in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region.
Editorial treatment
The title takes the number 1365, which the label and the catalogue both carry. Pitard's 1913 list prints no numbers, and the volume does not say whose series the numbers are. Mouret's other numbered sheets at Paris are not in date order and fall into runs by genus, which suggests the numbers were given when the plants were sorted or identified rather than in the field. The number is kept as the sheet's identifier all the same.
The collector field takes Mouret alone, as the label and Pitard give it. The International Plant Names Index records a Marcellin Mouret, 1881–1915, with collections from Viet Nam and Morocco, which matches Pitard's account of a collector in Tonkin and then Morocco. No printed source read for this page names the lieutenant Marcellin, so the forename is not added.
Pitard's name is given as C.-J. Pitard on the 1913 title page. René Maire's 1931 survey gives Charles-Joseph Pitard, 30 October 1873 to 29 December 1927, professor at the École de Médecine et de Pharmacie de Tours.
Gallica's text layer reads the 1913 entry as Cannabis saliva. In the italic face of that page the letter t prints like an l throughout (Urlica, Cellis), and the page image reads sativa.
Source discrepancies
- Mouret's death. Pitard (1931) says he was killed leading his company in an assault on enemy trenches in Champagne; Bouly de Lesdain (Mémoires de la Société des sciences naturelles du Maroc 8, 1924, p. 290) gives the same account. Maire (1931) says he fell in the Argonne in 1916. The International Plant Names Index gives 1881–1915 for Marcellin Mouret. The article gives both accounts.
