Why Moulay Abdeslam is a growing area

  • Finances News Hebdo (2015) reports kif grown since the late 1980s in the commune of Tazrout, round the douar of Lhssan near Moulay Abdeslam Ben Mchich, and speaks of "la région de Moulay Abdeslam" as a kif-growing region.
  • H24info (2022) reports a member of parliament's written question naming Beni Aârouss, Beni Guerfet and Tazrout among at least eight Larache communes where cannabis has long been grown. The claim is the member's, and the article gives it as his.
  • One genebank lot of INRA Maroc, Farnas 77 (Al Kifane), collected in May 2023, falls inside the border.
  • The status is Active: the 2015 report describes growing returning from 2008 and still going on, though declining, and the lot dates from 2023.

Extent and border

  • No source gives the limits of the region of Moulay Abdeslam. The map border is approximate: it is the cercle de Moulay Abdeslam-Ben Mchich in Larache Province, about 970 km², which holds the rural communes of Ayacha, Bni Arouss, Tazroute and Zaaroura and the caïdat of Bni Garfett. The three communes the sources name all lie in it.
  • OpenStreetMap has no border for the commune of Bni Garfett, so the circle is used as a whole.
  • Where the border meets Chefchaouen it follows that area's line. To the west it runs beside Larache land in no growing area. The area figure in the infobox is rounded from the border.

Sources

  • Start date. Finances News Hebdo (2015) dates the crop round Tazrout to the end of the 1980s. Afsahi and Mouna (2014) date cannabis in Larache Province to the 1990s and its eradication to 2004 onwards. The article gives the newspaper's local account.
  • Licensing. The 2022 decree names three provinces, not Larache. The article states what the decree names and what the member of parliament asked for.
