Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label gives the province, a place name read only in part, the date and the collector. It names no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (NAS00290144, 979 × 1,440 pixels).
- Label (printed HERBARIUM OF THE SHANGHAI SCIENCE INSTITUTE and collected by H.Migo; by hand): Cannabis sativa L. / 河北省 南[?]口 / Jul. 21. 1943.
- Pencil 868 at the lower left, over a red rectangular stamp cut off at the foot; a blank slip of brown paper glued above the plant. HOPEH province stamp; East China station stamp; red 089234.
The two readings agree on the province, the date and the collector. One reads the first character of the place name as 南, uncertain; the other leaves it unread.
Georeferencing
No point is given. The label's place reads 河北省 (Hopeh province) and a two-character name ending in 口, whose first character was read once, with doubt, as 南 and not read in the other reading. A point cannot rest on one uncertain character, and the province is the finest place read. The province field takes Hebei.
Editorial treatment
Title. The label gives no number, so the title takes s.n. (no number).
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's H. Migo. He is Migo Hisao (御江久夫): the Harvard botanist index gives the name, a birth year of 1905 and his collecting in south-western China from 1933 to 1943 for the Shanghai Science Institute; Wikidata gives the Japanese form 御江久夫, a birth year of 1900 and a death year of 1985. The index counts none of his gatherings in 1943 or in Hebei. The prose links Hisao Migo.
Locality. The locality field is left empty: the place name after the province is half unread.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
