Evidentiary scope

This sheet records what the plant was called and what it was used for, which almost nothing else in the South African corpus does. It records no place and no date beyond a twenty-year span, which almost everything else does. It is evidence about use and language rather than about a population, and it should be cited for the first and not the second.

It is a single gathering and shows neither a continuing population nor a living germplasm holding, so it supports neither a landrace nor a feral classification. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

The locality line on the label is blank and the database gives no locality, no coordinate and no altitude. The country is all that is recorded. No point is asserted.

Editorial treatment

The date is a range and no single date is entered. The label reads 1890 - 1910. The collection-date field is left empty rather than filled with either endpoint or a midpoint, and the title carries the range. Entering 1890, or 1900, would be inventing a precision the label refuses.

The Bews Herbarium states of its images: Copyright (©): Permission granted to reproduce for personal and educational use only. Commercial copying, hiring, lending is prohibited. That is not a free licence, so the file page rests on a fair-use rationale rather than on a licence template. A licence request to the herbarium would settle it.

The Bews Herbarium publishes 37,330 of its sheets online, against a collection its own site puts at about 150,000, so roughly two sheets in three are not catalogued anywhere public. Index Herbariorum names no database for it: the URL appears only in its website field. A search that stops at GBIF, or at Index Herbariorum's database fields, finds neither of its two Cannabis sheets.

The collector is given on the label as Father Fs. Mayr and in the database as Mayr, F. The article uses the label's form.

Source discrepancies

The printed card and the field tag spell the vernacular differently, or appear to: the card's first letter cannot be read with confidence. Both readings are given and neither is preferred.
