Evidentiary scope

The label reads Commonly cultivated for making the best kind of rope. 2 m high., for a plant gathered in Hopei on 9 September 1929. It does not name the place beyond the province, the variety, or who grew it. The statement is the collector's and is reported as his. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1929. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because the label does not name the place beyond the province, the variety, or who grew it.

Label reading

Read from the garden's image as relayed by GBIF's image cache (2000 × 3000 pixels).

  • Label (printed, completed by hand): FLORA OF NORTH CHINA / a bracketed handwritten line, unread in two independent readings / PEKING UNION MEDICAL COLLEGE / Cannabis sativa L. / Commonly cultivated for making the best kind of rope. 2 m high. / No. L.2441 Collector: J. C. Liu / Sept. 9, 1929 / det. (blank).
  • Determination slip. E. Small, Aug. 1975: Cannabis sativa L.

Georeferencing

No coordinate is asserted and the locality field is empty: the label's place line could not be read. The province field takes Hebei, from the catalogue's Hopei.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The collector field takes the label's J. C. Liu. He is probably Liu Ju-ch'iang (born 1895), an assistant in the Department of Pharmacology of the Peking Union Medical College who collected in Hopei in 1928 (H.-L. Li, Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 100, 1948), but no source ties him to this sheet, so the name is not expanded or linked.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue leaves out the label's note on rope and the plant's height.
