Evidentiary scope

The labels give the place, the date and the collector. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (PE 00557919, 1,019 × 1,440 pixels).

  • Field form (printed FLORA OF CHINA, typed): Field No. L.1923 / Date 1/7/1930 / Locality Western Hills, Peking / Family Moraceae / Name Cannabis sativa L. / Collector T.N.Liou.
  • Herbarium label (HERBARIUM ACADEMIÆ NATIONALIS PEKINENSIS / FLORA CHINENSIS, typed): Cannabis sativa Linn. / Western Hills, Peiping July 1, 1930 / Leg. T.N.Liou (1923). Det. W.Y.Hsia.
  • Stamps. A HOPEI province stamp struck over a fainter YUNNAN one; Hg Cl2; stamped number 421643.

The two readings agree.

  • Yangling sheets (WUK0001283, WUK0001284), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's images (WUK0001283, 990 × 1,440 pixels; WUK0001284, 990 × 1,440 pixels). On both, the typed Flora of China form: Field No. L.1923 / Date 1/7/1930 / Locality Western Hills, Peking / Family Moraceae / Collector T.N.Liou; and the label of the Herbarium Academiae Nationalis Pekinensis: Cannabis sativa Linn. / Western Hills, Peiping / July 1, 1930 / Leg. T.N.Liou (1925). Det. W.Y.Hsia. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The Western Hills (西山, Wikidata Q2501459) are the range of hills west of the city; OpenStreetMap holds no outline of the range from which to take a middle, and Wikidata gives it two points about 14 km apart. The label gives no place within the range and no altitude. The province field takes Beijing.

Editorial treatment

Number and title. The label's number is L.1923, the L marking Liou's series; the title takes the digits. Hsia 1923 (1930), gathered at Peitaiho in June 1930, carries the same digits in W. Y. Hsia's H. series: they are different gatherings.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's T. N. Liou. He is Liou Tchen-ngo (刘慎谔, 1897 or 1898 to 1975): the Harvard botanist index gives T. N. Liou as the label form of Liou, Tchen-ngo, with the dates 1898–1975; Wikidata and Chinese Wikipedia give 26 August 1897. The prose links Liou Tchen-ngo.

Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.

Three sheets, one accession. The Beijing and Yangling sheets share the field form's number, date, place and collector. The number follows the field form, L.1923 on all three sheets. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.

Source discrepancies

  • The herbarium labels on the two Yangling sheets read (1925); the field forms on all three sheets, and the Beijing label, read 1923.
  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists WUK0001283 under the collector W. Y. Hsia and the number 1925; the field form names T. N. Liou.
  • The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists each Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0001283 also as record be21187e; WUK0001284 also as record be20e0d3); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.
