Evidentiary scope

The slip records the plant as Culta (cultivated) at a named place, in 1877. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1877. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label, and is listed as a borderline case, since the place has not been read with certainty. It gives no use and no local name. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copy of the museum's image (1600 × 2474 pixels); the page states only what the two readings agree.

  • Collector's slip: handwritten Cannabis / a place line ending Culta / a month word and 77 / A. Letourneux.
  • Sheet: printed HERB. E. COSSON.; stamp HERB. MUS. PARIS; oval stamp DONATION DU DOCTEUR E. DURAND / ANCIEN HERBIER E. COSSON.

The place line is not agreed. One reading follows the catalogue's Hagueres in Naoucetie; the other reads Hagueres au Hasuatie, with low confidence. The month word is read Mais and Mois; the catalogue gives May. The page states neither place nor month as read.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The place on the slip has not been read with certainty, and the catalogue's Hagueres and Naoucetie were not found in Egypt in OpenStreetMap (also tried: names containing Haj, Hagu, Naus, Nawas and Naous).

Editorial treatment

Collector. Aristide-Horace Letourneux (1820–1890), a French magistrate, botanist and entomologist, was sent to Egypt in 1876 to sit on a mixed court at Alexandria (French Wikipedia, Aristide Letourneux), which agrees with the catalogue's Egypt in 1877. The collector field takes the slip's A. Letourneux.

Date. The slip gives 77 after a month word that is not agreed; the field stores the catalogue's year, 1877.
