Evidentiary scope
The label places a cannabis plant near a German colony of Transcaucasia in July 1844. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on whether the plant was grown or wild. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copy of the museum's image (1600 × 2487 pixels); the museum's own image server refused the connection. The page states only what the two readings agree.
- Printed label. № / Prope coloniam Helenendorf, territorii Elisabetho- / poleos. / Flora Transcauc. / Legit Dr. Kolenati. / 18 and 44. of the date.
- By hand (faint). 2046 after the №; 21/7 written as a fraction between 18 and 44. Both readings take the number as 2046 and the day and month as 21 July; the third digit of the number and the second digit of the day are the least certain at this resolution. The museum's catalogue gives the same number and date.
- Museum labels. A barcode label Herbier Muséum Paris / P06884321. A square-coded label at the top left carries a second number that neither reading could make out in full; it is not used.
- A pin crosses the word Helenendorf; both readings agree on it.
Georeferencing
The point 40.59, 46.32 is the town of Göygöl, OpenStreetMap node 229503490, which OpenStreetMap also tags with the former German name Helenendorf. The point lies 0.2 km from the node and inside Goygol District. The label places the gathering near the colony and names no spot; the built-up town reaches about 3 km from the point, and the uncertainty allows for that and for the label's prope (near). SRTM gives 680 m at the point; the label gives no altitude. It places the gathering at the colony, not at a spot near it. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.
Editorial treatment
Title. The title takes the number 2046 written on the label after the printed №.
Date. The label writes 21 July 1844 and does not say which calendar it follows. The Russian Empire then used the Julian calendar; 21 July 1844 in the Julian calendar is 2 August 1844 in the Gregorian. The field stores the date as the label writes it, as the catalogue does.
Place. Helenendorf was founded in 1819 by settlers from Württemberg, renamed Yelenino in 1931 and Khanlar in 1938, and has been Göygöl since 2008; it is the seat of Goygol District (English Wikipedia, Goygol (city) and Goygol District). The label's Elisabethopoleos (of Elisabethopolis) is Elisabethpol, today's Ganja. The locality field gives the label's place in English; the province field takes Goygol District, in which the town lies today and which the catalogue also gives, as Goygol.
Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's Kolenati; the label gives Dr. Kolenati. He is Friedrich August Kolenati (1812–1864), a Prague-born naturalist, a graduate of the medical faculty of Charles University, who became an assistant in zoology at the Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg in 1842 and took part in explorations of the Caucasus from 1842 to 1845 (English Wikipedia; Wikidata Q79162). He is not linked.
Taxon. The label carries no plant name. The infobox takes the catalogue's Cannabis L. The palmate leaves with long, narrow, toothed leaflets are those of cannabis; no determination to species was made for this page, and the sex of the plant is not stated.
Image. The museum's image server answered every route tried with a browser check; the upload is GBIF's cached copy of the museum's image, fetched at 1,600 pixels wide, under the museum's CC BY 4.0.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogue's verbatim locality reads territorii Elisabethopoleaos; the label prints Elisabetho- / poleos.
Sources not yet read
- Kolenati's account of his travels, Die Bereisung Hocharmeniens und Elisabethopols, der Schekinschen Provinz und des Kasbek im Central-Kaukasus (Dresden, 1858), whose title names Elisabethpol, was not read for this page. It may name the gathering place or say whether hemp was grown at the colony.
