Discussion

Why the area is mapped

  • Clarke (2023, p. 4) names the Küçük Menderes in İzmir province among the watersheds of the traditional Aegean hemp region, and (p. 8) gives hemp as about a quarter of the crops of Ödemiş through the 18th century, citing Taşlıgil and Şahin.
  • Akpınar and Nizamoğlu (2019, pp. 1230–1233) give hemp at Ödemiş and Tire in 1929 and 1,000 tonnes for Tire and Ödemiş in 1939. Taştemir (2003, p. 4) and Baytop (1995) list Ödemiş and Tire among the hemp places of western Anatolia.
  • No source gives the tract a name. Its towns lie in the Küçük Menderes basin, which Clarke names, so the valley gives the title.

Growing status

  • The status is Historical. Last grown: 1995: Baytop writes in the present tense that hemp is sown at Ödemiş and Tire. No source read says that growing ended, and none read reports it after 2000. İzmir Province was among the provinces licensed for hemp in 1990 and 2016, but no source read places a licensed crop in these districts.
  • No first year is set: the earliest source, for the 18th century, gives no year.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is the union of seven districts of İzmir Province in the Küçük Menderes basin in OpenStreetMap: Ödemiş (relation 1823318), Tire (1841226), Bayındır (1841223), Kiraz (1823317), Beydağ (1823316), Torbalı (1269519) and Selçuk (1841225); simplified, about 3,970 km². The sources name Ödemiş, Tire and Bayındır; the other four districts complete the basin, so that the area is the valley the sources point to. The basin's own watershed was not traced.
  • The map point (38.16, 27.85) lies between Ödemiş and Tire.

Sources

  • Akpınar and Nizamoğlu (2019), Clarke (2023), Baytop (1995) and Taştemir (2003) were read in full; Gezer (2016) in chapter 4.
  • Akpınar and Nizamoğlu give Ödemiş's production in 1929 as "2.700", with the unit, "kilo", on the next page. The article does not give the figure.
  • Clarke's statements on 16th-century hemp at Ayasuluğ, Tire, Ödemiş, Birgi and Bademli are sourced to an unreferenced conversation and are not used.
  • Gezer places the farmers who sold esrar leaves in 1886 only in "İzmir ve civarı" (İzmir and its surroundings); the article gives them at that scale.

Where the sources disagree

  • Clarke (2023, p. 9) writes that Tire and Ödemiş each produced about 1,000 tonnes in 1939; Akpınar and Nizamoğlu, whom he cites, give 1,000 tonnes for the two together. The article follows Akpınar and Nizamoğlu.
