Page scope
Jamuna chars is a Growing Area in Bangladesh with no parent growing region. It treats the cannabis grown on the river islands and sandbars of the Brahmaputra–Jamuna from the Indian border in Kurigram district to the Ganges confluence at Aricha, and the chars as a landscape. The chars of the same river upstream, in Assam, are at Brahmaputra chars. The districts belong at their own pages.

Why the area is on the map

  • Ajker Patrika (20 December 2022): a 40 kg cannabis plant seized from a farmer's yard in Shankarpur village, on a remote char of the Jamuna, Sariakandi upazila, Bogura district; he had planted it two years before. The officer in charge of the Chandanbaisha police investigation centre of Sariakandi police station confirmed it.
  • Bangla Times (21 November 2024): a cannabis garden in a homestead yard on the remote Jamuna char of Kathma Krishnanagar, Noarpara union, Islampur upazila, Jamalpur district.
  • The man in each report is named in the source and not in the article.

How the border is drawn

  • The border is a proxy: the braid belt of the river, meaning its channels and every char between its banks. It is drawn from the river-area polygons in OpenStreetMap along the Brahmaputra and the Jamuna: the main channel, the side channels next to it, the gaps between channels closed so that the chars join, and the outer edge only, so that every island and sandbar inside is included.
  • The belt runs from the international border, where the Brahmaputra chars end along the same line, to the Ganges confluence by Aricha. The Old Brahmaputra, which leaves the main stream at Bahadurabad, is not included. It covers about 2,800 km² in one piece.
  • The two reports fall in reaches the belt covers: more than half of Sariakandi upazila and about a third of Islampur upazila lie inside it, along the river. Neither report gives the position of its char, so the sites cannot be placed more exactly.
  • The area is bigger than the char land alone: the sources give about 1,000 km² of chars on the Jamuna (1992), while the border also takes in the channels between them.
  • Chars shift with erosion and deposition every year, so the outline is approximate even for the present river.

Parent region

No growing region covers the river in Bangladesh, so the area has none. The Brahmaputra Valley region, the parent of the Assam reach, covers the Assam valley floor only.

Title

The Bangladeshi reports say "Jamuna char" (যমুনার চর), and Banglapedia speaks of the "Jamuna chars". The area also takes in the river between the border and Bahadurabad, where the main stream is still called the Brahmaputra; the Bangladesh Water Development Board calls the whole stretch the Brahmaputra–Jamuna. The title follows the name of the river along most of the area's length.

Growing status

The status is Active: cannabis was seized on Jamuna chars in 2022 and 2024. No source read says that growing there has ended.

Sources read and not used

  • Kurigram district: cannabis plants seized at Islampur char in Char Bhurungamari union, at Tilai union on the Dudhkumar, and in a village garden at Dakshin Banshjani, all in Bhurungamari upazila (2026). These places lie west of the Brahmaputra, outside the border.
